Chronic disease is primarily driven by inflammation, a condition widespread in our society. Surprisingly, many healthcare professionals lack the knowledge to effectively assess and identify the underlying mechanisms of this inflammatory process.
Inflammation manifests through a range of symptoms, including:
Fatigue
Sleep disturbances
Mood irregularities
Weight fluctuations
Hormonal imbalances
Autoimmune issues
Thyroid dysfunction
Persistent pain
To gauge the presence and progress of inflammation, you can undergo straightforward laboratory tests. Some of my preferred tests include:
C-reactive protein: Maintaining levels between 0–3 mg/L
Homocysteine: Keeping levels below 8 umol/L
Ferritin: Maintaining levels below 122 ng/mL
LDH: Maintaining levels between 144–180 IU/L
Uric acid: Keeping levels between 3.2–5.5 mg/dL
Vitamin D: Given its role as a negative Acute phase reactant, the optimal range is 50-80.
Embarking on an inflammatory reset involves a comprehensive transformation of your diet, eliminating inflammatory foods, excess sugar, and processed carbohydrates, as well as industrialized oils. Additionally, incorporating daily physical activity and ensuring an ample amount of sleep are crucial components of this reset.

It’s estimated that 85% of people have some form of vitamin D deficiency without even recognizing it. Even if the above signs don’t readily describe you, you still may be experiencing a vitamin D deficiency and need to supplement in order to gain the benefits of vitamin D for overall health and disease prevention.
CAN SUN EXPOSURE PROVIDE US WITH ENOUGH VITAMIN D?
The short answer is yes. Sunlight exposure is one of the best and most natural ways to get vit D in the body, as the sun provides beneficial UVB wavelengths that are needed to optimize vit D levels. The best time to obtain healthy sun exposure is during high noon, as this is when the UVB rays are the strongest and the body will obtain the highest level of vit D in the shortest amount of time. When the UVB rays from the sun hit your skin, a cholesterol derivative within your skin is converted into vit D. The tricky part here is that vit D is an oil-soluble, steroid hormone which is not immediately absorbed into the bloodstream. It takes about 48 hours for this to occur, meaning if you shower and use soap on your whole body within 48 hours of sunlight exposure, you are likely washing off all of the great vit D that your body is producing. So, you have a few options in order to give your body time to absorb and benefit from the vitamin D gained through sun exposure. You can either not shower at all for 48 hours or you can only use soap on the areas that are necessary like underneath your arms, in your midsection, and your feet. This will allow the vit D on the rest of your skin to not be washed off.
You can also take a vit D supplement to be certain you are getting the right amount of vit D to balance your body’s needs. For kids, it is recommended to take around 2500 IU and for adults, it is recommended to take 5000 IU on a daily basis. If you do end up taking a vit D supplement, it may be important to also accompany it with vit K2, as vit K2 is essential for your body and works in tandem with vit D to maximize benefits.

Nutrition should serve as a means to enhance our well-being. However, many individuals are unaware of the profound influence their preferred foods can have on their blood sugar levels and, consequently, their overall health.
Common symptoms of blood sugar imbalances are experienced by a significant portion of the population on a daily basis. Persistent feelings of hunger, cravings for sweets, and manifestations such as acne, hormonal disruptions, and premature signs of aging, such as wrinkles, are just a few indicators of fluctuating blood sugar levels. If left unaddressed, these issues can escalate to more serious conditions, including but not limited to type 2 diabetes, infertility, fatty liver disease, and dementia.

Hopefully we are still a few weeks away from snow but in the midwest you can never be too sure when that first snow fall will come. We are going to share a few tips to keep you pain free (from shoveling at least) this winter.
❄Snow blowers are king!!! If you have invested in one of these then the rest of the tips are moot. Happy winter! If you haven't and plan on using a shovel, keep reading.
❄Snow plow type shovels are best and specifically one with wheels. If not using snow plow type shovels then use an ergonomic shovel.
❄When shoveling, move smaller amount of snow at a time. This will reduce the strain on your back and body.
❄During snow season, there is an increased risk of cardiovascular events due to the majority of individuals bot being in good cardiovascular health. Maintaining good cardiovascular health throughout the year is incredibly important and will make shoveling all that much easier.
❄Just like with any physical avitivity you may do, it is important to do a dynamic warm up. Doing so can reduce the likelihood of an injury. Stretches like cat/cow, hip CARs, and body weight squats will help get your body ready for shoveling.
Should you sustain an injury shoveling (or doing any other winter activity), give one of our chiropractors a call. We can help you get back on your feet and ready for the next snow storm!!
With Thanksgiving this week, here is something to consider.
