Most salon owners think they have people problems.

Most of the time, they actually have system problems.

When expectations aren’t clear, communication breaks down. Frustration builds. People start filling in the blanks with assumptions. That’s when the drama starts.

The truth is, systems don’t exist to control people. They exist to help people succeed.

The funny thing is that once your team experiences the benefit of a good system, they stop fighting them and start asking for them.

Because when you’re trying to build something bigger than yourself, you don’t have time to solve the same problem over and over. You need systems that free your team up to focus on what matters most.

And for all my creatives out there, systems are not the enemy of creativity. They’re what allow creativity to scale.

One thing I’ve learned as a salon owner: if you want buy-in, don’t just roll out the system.

Explain why.

Explain how it helps them.

Explain what problem it solves.

That’s the ticket.

After being a salon owner for just a year and a half and somehow attracting an absolute A-team, here’s what I know:

People don’t stay for aesthetics. They stay for leadership, growth, standards, culture, opportunity, honesty, and feeling like they’re building something meaningful.

You don’t attract high performers by begging people to join you. You attract them by becoming the kind of environment high performers are looking for.

Clear standards.
Clear vision.
Healthy culture.
Actual mentorship.
Consistency.
Accountability.
Room to grow.
And a leader willing to go first.

Not everyone will like the way you run things and that’s honestly a good thing. The clearer you are, the more the right people find you.

There’s a salon fit for everyone. We just happen to be a really good fit for ambitious people who want more out of this industry than just clocking in and clocking out.

And when you get a group of people all running uphill together?
That’s where the magic happens.

Be you. But better.

The bangs.
The layers.
The volume.
The attitude.
The whole “accidentally gorgeous without trying” thing.

She walked in cute and walked out looking like she’s about to drop a country album and ruin a man’s life respectfully.

Okay hair extension girls know exactly what I mean when I say every Harper Ellis color has its own personality 😂

If you wear Harper Ellis Extensions you KNOW the names too. Like Rooted Sandy, Rooted Riley, etc. Somehow we all end up emotionally attached to a certain blend and then mix different combos depending on the season, tan level, life crisis, or if the wind changes directions honestly.

But Rooted Sandy? Elite. She’s THAT girl. I wear her personally and mix her with everything.

So now I need opinions. Should change the name?! Think we can get them to change it? 👇

This morning I dropped my son off for his last day of elementary school. I turned around and went to the salon to wash and style a sweet client’s hair for her son’s funeral.

That kind of perspective will stop you in your tracks.

Being a hairstylist is such an intimate career. We walk with people through first dates, weddings, divorces, babies, celebrations, grief, loss, fresh starts and days they don’t know how they’ll get through. Sometimes we are one of the first calls people make. That’s not something I take lightly.

Today was heavy. Beautiful. Humbling.

It reminded me how fragile life is and how much we truly need each other. And honestly, there are moments where the only thing that carries you through is the kind of peace God gives that makes no logical sense. Miracle peace.

I love my clients deeply. Every single one of you. I’m incredibly honored to be trusted in these moments, both the joyful ones and the heartbreaking ones.

The right mentor doesn’t make life easier. They make you better.

A good mentor will push you harder than you would ever push yourself because they can see what you’re capable of before you fully can. They shave years off your journey by helping you avoid unnecessary circles, mistakes, ego, and burnout. That’s not weakness. That’s wisdom.

And don’t let people make you feel weird for having mentors. Every great athlete, leader, pastor, business owner, or artist has had someone guiding them. The people mocking mentorship are usually the ones trying to figure everything out alone.

At , mentorship is built into our culture. We believe growth happens faster when talented people are willing to pour into each other. It’s one of the reasons our team grows so quickly while delivering an incredible guest experience.
