This month and year, I celebrate 20 years of being a cosmetologist. While I am grateful, it has not been an ideal career choice for me. (⚠️ long post)

I have tried many different tactics to make cosmetology work for the life I want and pursue spiritual goals, yet the cons continue to outweigh the pros. I have many reasons why I’m changing my career and I’ll share one.

Being an entrepreneur is hard. If you’ve known me for awhile, I called myself quitting hair back in 2013. That’s a story for another day. Yes social media glamorize turning a hobby into a business and I can only speak of the beauty industry career. It has plenty of expensive overhead costs, you’re never really off, benefits, sick days and insurance is either nonexistent or another very expensive costs. Even my husband encouraged a change because he saw the work I put in with very little rewards. He’s an employee and while his job is not “perfect rays of sunshine” we weighed the pros and cons.

Remember I’m only sharing my opinion and experience. When entrepreneurs rely on their own creative work as their primary source of income the stress of gaining a customer, making a sale, and keeping people happy all while maintaining the operating and life expenses, it all just saps all the joy out of the creative side, for me. Don’t get me wrong, I will continue to be a creative and run a business because it has its joys and pros but I need it to be my creative outlet and a supplemental or emergency income.

Am I going through an early midlife crisis? Noooo 😂. This wasn’t a new idea or feeling. I just would get nervous of making a change and I wanted to make a well thought out change. So, I prayed and continue to pray for direction. Therefore, I’m not searching for happiness from a career. I’ve been happy with my life. I am just in need of work that makes sense for my family and I. Work that feel like I’ve accomplished what I need it to accomplish, after I completed a days work.

Again, these are my experiences after 20 years and I understand that everyones experiences, goals and circumstances are completely different.

I believe if a change is needed and the opportunity for a change exist, change.

I’ve decided to join in hubby workouts.
Will I get on his nerves?
How long will I last?
