"I expected my regular client yesterday to cancel. She just lost her 45 year old husband tragically last month. They have 4 school aged boys. She confirmed her appointment, so I knew she probably needed some " me" time. I didn't ask how she was doing, the lost look on her face told it all. When I brought her to the chair , I dove right into the consultation, the look on her face was relief. I made small talk, the weather, our pets, the amount of p**p we needed to clean up when the snow melted and I kept it simple and as normal as possible. We then started talking about a new baby in her family , all the paraphernalia they have now , our pregnancies, labor, delivery and all those memories. She was laughing and smiling, and it all felt like a completely normal visit. I was able to let her just be a woman getting her hair done. She went to pay me and I said absolutely not, this one's on me, I'm so sorry for your loss and my heart goes out to you and your family, it's the least I can do. She said she couldn't thank me enough then proceeded to tell me how she was dealing with everything. I listened and told her what a great mom she is. She looks at her reflection in the mirror, touches her hair and tells me how much she needed that. It was just a haircut but sometimes it's more. If she had canceled last minute, I would have understood. I purposely didn't book anyone immediately after because I wanted to take my time. Did I lose money? Yes. But this appointment wasn't about that. Compassion and understanding go a long way. We are in this industry to make people feel good. I left the salon feeling fulfilled that I was able to provide a service that I was proud of and her laughter and smiles were priceless. We really do more than just hair."
