Three Things You Can Do To Spring Clean Your Life
This year do more than wash windows and empty closets!

When we talk about spring cleaning, it’s usually about emptying closets and organizing garages. But what I learned a few years ago is how equally important it is to spring clean your life. That’s why each April, in addition to getting lots of clothes and toys ready for Goodwill, I spend some of my most valuable time, taking inventory of everything on my plate, and in my head, and getting rid of what shouldn't be there anymore.

Set or Re-Set Your Priorities. Working women need to spring clean life

Let’s face it, a lot can change in a year. What may have been a top priority twelve months ago may not be one now. Last spring as I was ramping up my business, I needed to find more time in the week to dedicate to my new endeavor. I sat down with my calendar and looked at all my weekly commitments, and decided what activities were a must, and which ones could be dropped. While it’s hard to say “no,” especially for women, I was able to find ten more hours a week of super-productive time, by eliminating the non priority activities.

Take Action: Write down your three or four top priorities in your life. Then make sure everything you’re spending your time on serves them. And before you take on something new, check it against this list. If it doesn't help you work toward your priorities, don’t do it.

Eliminate Time Suckers

Another part of my spring cleaning ritual is to uncover all the things I do on a daily, weekly or monthly basis that suck my time. We've all got them. Do you find yourself constantly looking for the stuff you or your kids need before you run out the door because it doesn't have a set place (or hasn't been put back where it belongs)? Could you be more productive during those nooks and crannies of time between all the “big stuff” if you just spent 15 minutes a week on your schedule, planning efficiency in errands, meals, other multi-tasking opportunities? What about being faithful to your top priorities by making a morning to-do list of the things that absolutely has to get done that day, in order of importance?

This year I’m tackling a real weakness of mine – clutter! I’m focusing on organizational efficiency, so I know where everything I need is with either a few clicks of the mouse or a few steps in my house. This will not only save me time, but clutter in the house is clutter in the brain.

Take Action: Carry a notebook around with you for 3 days and capture everything you do and how long it takes you to do it – no cheating! This will help you uncover what’s derailing your productivity and stealing time from your top priorities and all the things you love. Once you’ve identified what’s sucking your time, you can then start make efforts toward making the most of the time your have.

Destroy the Distractions

One thing I’ve learned, the busier I get, the easier it is for me to get distracted. And once that happens, I start feeling like a pinball, bouncing from one task to another, which increases my stress and decreases my productivity. So I have to stay vigilant against the things that can derail my focus. And since I work from home, my “office” is chock full of would-be distractions: the dogs, the laundry, the plants, the yard work, the refrigerator…you get the idea.

I’ve had to learn to carve out sacred time on my daily schedule for things that must get done – whether it’s work, working out, sleep and time with my family. Instead of answering every bloody email and call the minute it comes in, I have set times for responding, which preserves the uninterrupted time I need to accomplish things that require full concentration. Although the immediacy of email is gratifying, and a phone call can be a welcome excuse from difficult tasks, the reality is that most calls and emails can wait. And I’ve had to learn to ignore a full laundry basket and the new baby gift that hasn’t been sent, until I’ve accomplished the other things that serve my top priorities.

Take Action: By carrying around your notebook, you’ll be able capture everything that distracts you during the course of the day. That’s why it’s so important to write down every single thing you do. Then write down four things you’ll start doing now to keep you from being a human pinball machine.

Be Realistic

Just like it’s hard to get to every spring cleaning project in your house, don’t expect your life to be ready for the white glove test after a few weeks. Like anything, cleaning out your life takes time and practice. Focus on just a few things this Spring, and next year you’ll tackle a few more. But if you get in the habit of setting your priorities, getting rid of time suckers and eliminating distractions now, you’ll be able to reduce stress and fit in more of the things you want to do throughout the rest of the year. And that’s how you’ll get closer to designing the life you’ll really love.
