This client came in with very oily skin, dry patches, dry breakouts/acne, and dehydration. Discovered that she is using retinol and salicylic acid together almost every day which can have these effects. This combination can dry out the skin where it will take all the oil out and cause your skin to overproduce oil leading to acne caused by excessive oil, over exfoliation, and over clogged pores. Client felt both dry and excessively oily in multiple areas, excessive to where makeup does not stay on throughout the day. Recommended she switch to a hydrating cleanser without acids for daily use and continue to use her retinol as it was prescribed by her dermatologist. As an esthetician, we are not medical professionals, and we use should never change a dermatologist prescription. I did choose to dermaplane (she requested if possible) instead of an enzyme because after review her skin barrier felt in a good shape and as her professional I can choose to do so if safe to do so.
