WHAT ARE "FREE RADICALS" IN SKINCARE AND HOW DO ANTIOXIDANTS HELP?

Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause damage to cells by attaching themselves to good skin cells on a molecular basis, thereby damaging the good skin cells and producing oxidation in your skin. They are generated through various processes, including:

1. **Environmental Factors**: Exposure to UV radiation from the sun, pollution, and cigarette smoke can increase free radical production.

2. **Metabolic Processes**: Normal metabolic processes in the body, such as respiration and inflammation, can also produce free radicals.

- **Oxidative Stress**: Free radicals can lead to oxidative stress, a condition where there is an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants in the body. This can result in cellular damage.
