Does Skincare Need a Scent?

There are two camps out there. Some people specifically seek out fragrance-free formulas. Others walk into a store, open the jar, take a sniff, and only then decide if it's coming home with them or not.

From a pure efficacy standpoint, scent usually isn't necessary at all. In fact, it means additional formula components, cost, and for some sensitive skin, a potential source of irritation. However, there is another factor to consider, is whether you actually enjoy using your product. That's a different story entirely.

I believe skincare shouldn't just work, it should be something you genuinely look forward to using. And sometimes, scent is a huge part of that joy, especially in body products like creams, oils, and scrubs. Beyond that, scent carries memory, emotion, and yes, even our perception of a product's value. You've probably noticed how luxury skincare often has that unmistakable, "expensive" smell.

The key is making sure the scent complements a genuinely good formula, never stands in for real efficacy.

Today I turn 55, and honestly, gratitude is the only thing on my mind. I'm thankful to have made it this far, and even more thankful for the loving family and endlessly supportive friends who've walked every step with me.

Scented candles. Air fresheners. Ask me why, and I'll tell you it comes down to one word hiding on almost every label: Fragrance.

That single word is legally allowed to represent hundreds of undisclosed chemical compounds, protected as a "trade secret," so companies never have to tell you what's actually inside. And very often, what's inside includes phthalates.

Phthalates are used specifically to make scent linger longer, in candles, air fresheners, sprays, even some skincare. The catch is that they're also well-documented endocrine disruptors, meaning they interfere with your body's natural hormone signaling. Research has linked phthalate exposure to reduced testosterone, disrupted ovarian function, and hormonal imbalance, and when a candle burns, a significant portion of those compounds attach to airborne particles and travel straight into your lungs.

One real example: DEP (Diethyl Phthalate), a common fragrance-fixative phthalate, has been studied for its ability to interfere with hormone production and regulation, exactly the kind of quiet, cumulative exposure most of us never think twice about.

This is exactly why "fragrance" is one of the first words I look for, and avoid, on any label that enters my home. Not because I don't love a beautifully scented space. But because I'd rather get that scent from something honest: essential oils, or nothing hidden behind a trade secret at all. Choose essential oil farmers or diffusers instead.
