I love cupping because it really does help release the tension in the tissue. It helps with circulation at the same time. Cupping helps the tightness, range of motion. It is also great to help calm the nervous system down, calming it will help release muscle tissue in the body by calming the brain.

You've seen both at LM, but what's the difference?

Cupping works through suction.

Instrument-assisted soft-tissue work uses a handheld tool over the skin.

They're different techniques and neither is automatically right for every person.

Swipe through to see how they differ and why LM may incorporate different tools into a personalized therapeutic treatment.

Does treatment have to hurt to be effective?

The answer depends on what we’re actually treating.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage itself is traditionally a gentle technique. More intensive therapeutic work involving restricted or sensitive tissue, however, can sometimes feel tender or uncomfortable.

In today’s video, LILI shares her personal approach.

She believes there are situations where working through significant restrictions may involve some temporary discomfort, and she’ll explain why. But discomfort isn’t the goal, and more pain does not automatically mean a better treatment.

The right amount of pressure and the right technique depend on the person, the tissue and the reason you’re being treated.

Communication with your therapist matters.

A treatment doesn’t need to be painful to be working.

Different techniques use different amounts of pressure, and the appropriate sensation depends on what is being treated.

MLD is generally very gentle. Therapeutic soft-tissue work may feel more intense, particularly in sensitive or restricted areas.

The most important part?

Your therapist should be communicating with you.

Swipe through for a simple breakdown.

They all involve the lymphatic system, but they’re not necessarily the same treatment.

Understanding the reason someone is seeking lymphatic care matters.

Not every lymphatic treatment is the same, and that’s an important distinction.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage, post-operative lymphatic care and treatment for someone managing lymphedema can have different goals, considerations and techniques.

For example, traditional MLD uses very gentle, specific movements designed around lymphatic pathways. Lymphedema management may involve a broader approach that can include compression, exercise, skin care and other components of Complete Decongestive Therapy.

And post-operative care needs to take your specific procedure and stage of healing into account.

In today’s video, LILI explains why knowing what you’re treating matters before deciding how to treat it.
