Dry needling vs. acupuncture

Now that it’s being talked about in the news, I think it’s important to talk about and provide more education on the difference.

It’s definitely a conversation amongst the acupuncture profession, and the time and level of education that we receive in school in order to be an acupuncturist should be acknowledged. We do this in order to provide the best care possible to our patients.

What are your thoughts?

The Heart channel in TCM is more than a physical pathway, it’s the home of the Shen, our spirit, consciousness, and emotional regulation ❤️

When the Heart is balanced, we feel calm joy, mental clarity, and emotional steadiness. Sleep comes easier, thoughts feel less scattered, and we’re able to stay present instead of overwhelmed.

When the Heart is strained, emotions can feel loud; anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, or that “wired but tired” feeling often show up first.

Supporting the Heart channel is about creating safety in the nervous system, so the mind can finally rest.

These spreadsheets have been such a lifesaver in class and clinic 🪡a quick guide I can flip back to whenever I need to double-check something. I’ve even started breaking down other concepts into spreadsheet form and using Quizlet to reinforce it all, and honestly, it’s helped so much.

Going back to school in my 30s has become its own kind of healing 🪽rebuilding study habits, shifting expectations, and learning how my brain works now. I used to pride myself on being the “good student,” the one who had everything organized and knew the material. But this season feels different. And that’s okay.

Life changes, we evolve, and so do the ways we learn. Some days I’m sharp and aligned, and other days it takes everything just to focus, both are part of the process. If you’re on this journey too, give yourself room to grow, make mistakes, and find new rhythms. Balance takes time, and you don’t have to master everything at once. 🌿📖✨

Fear, Flow & the Water Organs 🌊

In traditional wisdom, fear is stored in the water organs - the kidneys and bladder -influencing how safe, grounded, and resilient we feel in life. When this system is balanced, fear softens into flow, intuition, and steady inner strength.

When we live in constant fight or flight, the body stays in survival mode, forcing the water organs to work overtime to manage stress hormones and emotional pressure. Over time, this can leave us feeling anxious, exhausted, tense, and disconnected from our natural rhythm.

Slowing down, nourishing your nervous system, and creating moments of safety in your body allows your water energy to restore itself. When you care for your water organs, you don’t just recover 🦋 you return to flow.

How we can harmonize our bodies with the season of yin 〰️

With shorter days and colder months, our bodies naturally desire to align with practices that embody yin.

Yin requires us to slow down; to rest and reflect.

Here are a few simple practices to welcome yin into your routine....

Restore🌒During the winter months, it’s perfectly natural, and even beneficial, to hit the snooze button when you can. You may find yourself wanting to sleep in a little longer or go to bed earlier. I encourage you to lean into that rhythm.

Receive🌒While yang embodies “doing” and “giving,” yin asks us to be still and receive. This is a good time to practice doing less and allowing yourself to welcome support from others. I his may look different for everyone, but some examples include accepting a compliment from a friend, allowing your partner to make dinner, or letting a coworker help you with a task.

Nourish🌒As the temperatures drop, it’s important to build your internal fire with warm beverages and foods. Drinking warm tea or water, eating warm and colorful foods like purple yams and lamb and incorporating moisture rich foods to support the kidneys
Reflect: Yin season is the perfect time to reflect and go inward. This can show up through journaling, yoga, walks outside, meditation or whatever is calling to you. It’s a good time to bring stillness to the mind. Through this showing compassion and being gentle to ourselves.

Reflect🌒The yin season is the perfect time to slow down, turn inward, and reflect. This might show up through journaling, yoga, quiet walks outside, meditation, or whatever practice feels right for you. It’s a time to invite stillness into the mind and to meet yourself with compassion and gentleness.

In the quiet of the yin season, may you find comfort in slowing down, openness in receiving, and wisdom in reflection. Let this gentle pause restore you from the inside out

Chinese medicine holds a firm belief in keeping your neck covered to protect your body from wind 🌬️

In TCM, wind is considered one of the Six Evils🦠 an external pathogen that can combine with cold, heat, or dampness and quickly create imbalance in the body. Wind moves swiftly, carries illness, and most easily enters through the back of the neck, the base of the skull, and the upper back when these areas are left uncovered. This is why this area is called your “Wind Gate,” it is truly the entrance for wind to enter, which is why it is so essential that we protect our gate during the cold months.

Once wind penetrates these vulnerable areas, it can disrupt your Wei Qi, the body’s defensive qi (aka your immune system). When Wei Qi is compromised, the body becomes more susceptible to colds, flu-like symptoms, stiffness, and overall imbalance.

This area of the body is home to several powerful acupuncture 🌿 points specifically related to dispelling wind, including:
• GB 20 – Wind Pool
• GV 16 – Wind Palace
• UB 12 – Wind Gate
• SI 17 – Shielding Wind

These points help expel external pathogens, ease symptoms like stiff neck, fever, and headaches, and strengthen the body’s natural defenses.

✨ So as the seasons shift, think of your scarf as more than an accessory—it’s protection for your energy, your immunity, and your overall balance.
