Wonder fruit that can prevent asthma, lower stroke risk, boost immune system, maintain iron absorption and help with weight loss.

It can be a delicious summer drink, or you can add it to many sauces, salad dressings, marinades and deserts

Lemon is one of the most popular and versatile citrus fruits. Its popularity is owed to it’s refreshing flavor and scent making it a popular choice in many recipes and even an ingredient in perfumes.
Lemons are a popular fruit. Due to their intense, sour flavor they are rarely consumed alone or in large quantities.

They are a flavorful ingredient in many sauces, salad dressings, marinades, drinks, and desserts, and they are also a good source of vitamin C.
Lemons have been used as preventative medicine throughout history. Early explorers took lemons first on their long voyages to help prevent or treat scurvy, a serious condition that results from a vitamin C deficiency. In 1747, James Lind found that lemons and oranges were extremely effective at treating this disease, which was common among sailors.
Lemons are widely used in all sorts of drinks from teas and cocktails to juices. Along with using it for its flavor, lemon has also been used for its medicinal value. As a rich source of vitamin C, lemon possess immense health benefits ranging from its antibacterial and antiviral properties to its immune boosting abilities.

One of the most common ways to reap the health benefits of lemon is by juicing it. Lemon juice acts as a digestive and a detoxifying agent and helps in detoxifying the liver, leading to better digestive health.

Lemon juice is also effective for weight loss as it increases the body’s metabolic rate. For people looking to use lemon for its weight loss abilities, drinking lemon juice with warm water on an empty stomach every morning can produce amazing results.

Along with the weight loss benefits, drinking warm lemon water every morning also has numerous other benefits. Consuming a range of fruits and vegetables appears to reduce the risk of many lifestyle-related health conditions.Lemons are a good source of vitamin C and antioxidants (flavonoids), which are thought to boost health and wellbeing in several ways.
Let's look at some of the potential benefits of consuming lemons.
1) Lowering stroke risk
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), citrus fruits may help lower the risk of ischemic stroke in women. Ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke. It is caused by a blood clot blocking the flow of blood to the brain.
A study of data from nearly 70,000 women over 14 years showed that those who ate the most citrus fruit had a 19 percent lower risk of ischemic stroke than women who consumed the least.
According to Aedín Cassidy, Ph.D., lead author of the study, higher fruit, vegetable, and specifically vitamin C intake is associated with reduced stroke risk. Flavonoids, present in certain fruits and vegetable, are thought to provide some of that protection through several mechanisms, including improved blood vessel function and an anti-inflammatory effect.
Citrus fruits are also a good source of flavonoids, which are thought to help protect against cancer and cardiovascular disease.
2) Maintaining a healthy blood pressure
One Japanese study found that out of 101 women, those who walked regularly and consumed lemon every day had lower blood pressure than those who did not. As this was a corrolative study, the scientists called for more research in order to confirm the positive effect.
3) Cancer prevention
Lemon and lemon juice are an excellent source of the antioxidant vitamin C. It has long been hypotesized that antioxidants may help prevent the formation of free radicals that are known to cause cancer, although the exact role played by antioxidants in cancer prevention remains unclear.
4) Maintaining a healthy complexion
Vitamin C plays a vital role in the formation of collagen, skins main structural protein.
According to one study published in 2014, when eaten in its natural form or applied topically, vitamin C can help fight skin damage caused by the sun and pollution, reduce wrinkles, and improve overall skin texture. (NEED CITE)

5) Preventing asthma
The risk of developing asthma appears to be lower in people who consume a high amount of certain nutrients. One of the nutrients identified was vitamin C. Scientists hope that further studies will uncover as to how this process works.
Another review published in Journal of Allergy, Asthma & Clinical Immunology found that vitamin C benefitted people with asthma and bronchial hypersensitivity when they also had a common cold.
The study concluded that it may be reasonable for asthmatic patients to test vitamin C on an individual basis if they have exacerbations of asthma caused by respiratory infections. Research on the role of vitamin C on common cold-induced asthma continues.
6) Increasing iron absorption
Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies in developed countries and a leading cause of anemia.
Pairing foods that are high in vitamin C with foods that are iron-rich maximizes the body's ability to absorb iron.
Spinach and chickpeas, for example, are good sources of iron. Squeezing a little lemon juice on top of a salad with these ingredients can help maximize the intake of iron as well as vitamin C.
7) Boosting the immune system
Foods that are high in vitamin C and other antioxidants may help strengthen the immune system and fight germs that cause common cold and flu.
One study indicated that, while vitamin C supplements do not appear to reduce the incidence of colds in a population, they may help reduce the duration of a cold. Vitamin C may also help boost immunity in people who are undergoing extreme physical activity.
Squeezing a whole lemon into a glass of hot water with a large spoonful of honey makes a soothing drink for someone with a cough or a cold.
8) Weight loss
Lemon has also shown potential benefit in speeding up weight loss. A study, published in 2008, found that when rodents that received lemon phenols along with a high-fat diet for 12 weeks, they did not gain as much weight as rodents that did not receive the lemon-peel phenols. Lemon phenols are present in lemon peel.
Further research will be necessary to see whether this would have the same effect on humans is not clear. However, as seen previously, consuming lemon juice also increases metabolism and further helps with weight loss.

Vitamin C
Majority of lemon's health benefits can be traced to its high vitamin C content. Vitamin C has long been seen as an antioxidant, anti-atherogenic, and anti-carcinogenic. However, some of these claims have been questioned in recent years, and the precise effect of ascorbic acid remains unclear. Scientists have theorized that the difference in studies might be due to difference in quality of vitamin C consimed (i.e. whether the vitamin C was derived from natural of synthetic sources) Of course, more research will needed to uncover the precise benefits of vitamin C.
The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), a branch of National Institutes of Health, has advised that consumption of vitamin C might slow or reduce the risk of:
• some types of cancer
• cardiovascular disease
• age-related mascular degeneration (AMD)

They also note that taking vitamin C supplements after a cold starts is unlikely to stop or cure the cold.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) national nutrient database says that one raw lemon, without peel, weighing about 58 grams (g), contains 44.5 mg of vitamin C.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for women aged 19 years and older is 75 mg of vitamin C a day, while men aged 19 years and older should consume 90 mg. Smokers need 35 mg per day more than nonsmokers.

One lemon also provides:
• 17 calories
• 0.64 g of protein
• 0.17 g of fat
• 5.41 g of carbohydrates, including 1.6 g of fiber and 1.45 g of sugar
• 15 milligrams (mg) of calcium
• 0.5 mg of iron
• 7 mg of magnesium
• 13 mg of phosphorus
• 116 mg of potassium
• 2 mg of sodium
• 0.05 mg of zinc
• 9 micrograms (mcg) of folate
• 1 mg of vitamin A

In addition, lemons contain small amounts of thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B-6, pantothenic acid, copper, and manganese.

Fatty fruit high in antioxidants, prevents osteoporosis, reduces cholesterol and helps curb your desire for junk food

Avocado is the fatty fruit of the avocado tree, scientifically known as Persea americana. It is native to Mexico and Central America.

Rich in monounsaturated fats, the avocado has a smooth and creamy texture. It is much higher in fat than most other fruits.
Avocados have a unique nutritional profile. They are a high fiber food and are a great source of vitamins C, E, K, and B-6, as well as riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, and potassium.

The consumption of avocados has been associated with various health benefits, such as decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. They are also very satiating and may be useful for weight loss.

There are many different types of avocados, varying in color, size and shape, with Hass avocados being most popular. (Chances are the avocados you see at your local grocery store are most likely Hass.)

Avocados are usually pear-shaped to round and they come in many different shades of green, ranging from pale green to almost black when fully ripe. As everyone knows, they are delicious on their own (avocado on toast anyone?), but are also commonly used as an ingedient in dishes like guacamole and salads.

Avocado Benefits

Avocados are high in antioxidants and many other important nutrients, some of which are getting hard to come by in our modern western diet. They have numerous health benefits, and it is not surprising to see avocados as a new staple in healthy diets.

Heart health

Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide .High blood cholesterol levels, triglycerides, inflammatory markers and blood pressure have all been associated with increased risk of heart disease.
Research has shown that avocado consumption may reduce overall blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels significantly, as well as lower the potentially harmful LDL cholesterol and increase the good HDL cholesterol.

Some people on calorie restricted diets have been avoiding avocados due to their high fat content. However, research has shown that eating avocados does not seem to prevent weight loss in overweight people.
In fact, eating avocados as a part of a balanced diet seems to keep people satiated (full) for longer periods of time and reduces their desire to eat for many hours, compared to a similar meal without avocados

Eating a diet that contains plenty of fruits and vegetables of all kinds has long been associated with a reduced risk of sedentary lifestyle-related health conditions.

Numerous studies have found that a predominantly plant-based diet that includes foods such as avocados can help to decrease the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and overall mortality, while promoting desirable outcomes, such as healthy complexion, healthy hair, increased energy and lower overall weight.

.Avocados are nutrient rich
According to the USDA National Nutrient Database, one serving (one-fifth of an avocado, approximately 40 grams) contains:
• 64 calories
• almost 6 grams of fat (the good kind - omega-3 fatty acids)
• 3.4 grams of carbohydrates
• less than a gram of sugar
• almost 3 grams of fiber

Avocados are a great source of vitamins C, E, K, and B-6, as well as riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, and potassium. They also contain lutein, beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Although most of the calories in an avocado come from fat, don't shy away! Fat is essential for every single cell in a body. Eating healthy fats supports skin health, enhances the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, and may even help boost the immune system.
Avocados are full of healthy, beneficial fats that help to keep you full and satiated. When you consume fat, your brain receives a signal to turn off your appetite. Eating fat also slows the breakdown of carbohydrates, which helps to keep blood sugar levels stable and helps fight onset of type 2 diabetes.

Great for vision

Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two phytochemicals that are especially concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. There they provide antioxidant protection to help minimize damage, including damage from ultraviolet light.
As monounsaturated fatty acids in avocados also support the absorption of other beneficial fat-soluble antioxidants, such as beta-carotene, adding avocados to your diet may help to reduce the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration.

Osteoporosis prevention

One of the most overlooked vitamins in the modern diet is vitamin K. This vitamin is essential for bone health. It is often overshadowed by calcium and vitamin D when thinking of nutrients important for maintaining healthy bones. However, eating a diet containing vitamin K can support bone health by increasing calcium absorption and reducing urinary excretion of calcium.
Half of an avocado provides approximately 25 percent of the daily recommended intake of vitamin K.

Adequate intake of folate from food has shown promise in protecting against colon, stomach, pancreatic, and cervical cancers.
Although the mechanism behind this apparent reduction in risk is currently unknown, researchers believe that folate protects against undesirable mutations in DNA and RNA during cell division.
Avocados are high in folate, providing 81mcg of folate per 100 grams, and a single avocado provides 42% of daily recommended allowance.
Avocados may even have a role to play in cancer treatment, with some research finding that phytochemicals extracted from avocado can selectively inhibit the growth of precancerous and cancerous cells and cause the death of cancer cells, while encouraging the proliferation of immune system cells called lymphocytes.

These phytochemicals have also been shown to decrease chromosomal damage caused by cyclophosphamide, a common chemotherapy drug.

As you can see, in addition to being delicious, avocados are a superfood that can provide positive benefits to all aspects of your overall health. Pick some up and add to your favorite smoothie, burger, or just on its own with some toast and a dash of himalayan salt.
