DAY 5: Why should you use Eye Cream?

Basically, Eyes Age First. It’s sad, but true. We see the first signs of aging near our eyes—think crow’s feet, dark circles, under eye bags.

Sleep deprivation, pollution, the sun’s rays, putting in contact lenses and taking off makeup, even smiling, frowning or just blinking - everything seems to take a toll on our fragile eye area. The eyelid is the thinnest skin on the body and since it’s constantly active (we blink 10,000 times a day), the skin around the eye area is the first to show age. Eye creams are designed to be lighter in texture than facial moisturizers. They are formulated specifically for the delicate skin around the eye.

When it comes to eye cream, packing on a lot of products will not make it more effective. To apply, just use your ring finger to dab or dot a pea-sized amount along your brow bone and about a half inch underneath your eye. Do not use it directly on your eyelids. Start at the outer corner of your eye where crow’s feet could be and work along the orbital bone around your eye. Eye cream can spread after applying so be careful not to get too close to your eye or on your eyelashes! Always give your eye cream about a minute or longer to absorb and dry before you put makeup on top of it.

DAY 4: Why should you hydrate your skin?

Did you know when your skin is well-hydrated, it is more resilient? Hydrated skin will remain flexible and allow your protective lipid barrier to remain intact while keeping moisture in. Therefore, skin must be adequately hydrated to protect it from environmental factors, UV radiation, germs and irritants!

Exfoliating and wearing sunscreen as well as focusing on a healthy diet can all help with hydration, but the best and easiest way to instantly hydrate your skin is to apply a product containing hyaluronic acid prior to your daily moisturizer. Why should you exfoliate?

You may be cleansing, toning, and moisturizing - but if you’re not exfoliating, your skin isn’t as healthy as it could be! Exfoliating regularly is essential because it gets rid of dulling, dead skin cells to allow younger, healthier-looking cells to surface. It also preps skin for the products that follow by removing dry, dead skin cells that can create a barrier to your moisturizer or make other skincare ingredients less effective. To optimize the results you see with your daily regimen, make sure you are exfoliating at least once a week.

Everyone has a different skin type, so it’s important to find an exfoliation product that fits your personal needs. If you use a manual exfoliating scrub, choose one with smooth, round granules rather than jagged, rough particles to avoid injuring your skin. Be gentle with the scrub—a light touch is all you need to slough off the dead skin cells. Any more than that and you’re likely to irritate your skin.

Why do you use a toner?

It’s an important step that many people skip because they may not understand its purpose. It not only completes the cleansing process, as it rids the skin of excess oil, dirt and leftover cleanser, but allows for better and more even absorption on the surface of the skin to get the maximum benefits from the efficacious moisturizer that follows. Additionally, toners can help soften skin, minimize the appearance of pores and exfoliate to promote natural cell turnover.

Stress and environmental factors can actually turn the skin's pH acidic. Plus, any time you cleanse you inevitably strip the skin. So the point of toner is to get rid of the excess but, most importantly, balance the skin’s pH level (where it is healthiest).

Toners also work to prep the skin for moisturizers, serum and other products. It travels deeper into the pores than creams and washes to kill any lingering bacteria. Specific toners exist to address certain skin concerns such as sensitivity, acne, brown spots, dullness, aging and even pore size.

Face wash is an important first step to building your routine. At night, cleansing is all about removing makeup, dirt, oil and pollution that your skin accumulates throughout the day. But overnight, your skin encounters less dirt and fewer aforementioned potential pore-clogging agents but cleansing in the morning is equally important.
While cleansing at night is crucial, notes dermatologist Dr. Vivian Bucay. “In the morning, it’s more of a refresh with the purpose of establishing a good pH in the skin”. Dr. Bucay also notes that 5.4 to 5.5 is the ideal pH to absorb products.
