🚨 BLACK BOX DYE IS NOT JUST “BLACK HAIR COLOR” 🚨

One of the most important things I want clients to understand about at home black dye is that removing it is rarely a simple color service.

I recently had a client come in wanting to remove years of at home black dye. We started with Malibu C CPR, a professional color pigment remover designed to help remove artificial color.

The interesting part? Her mids and ends lifted, but the hair closer to the scalp barely moved.

Why?

Hair can have a LOT of history. Different areas may have different layers of artificial color, different levels of porosity, and different amounts of previous processing. Even though the hair looks like one solid black color, underneath it can be completely different from section to section.

And this is exactly why trying to bleach over black box dye at home can be so risky.

When removing dark artificial color, the goal isn’t simply “make it lighter.” We have to consider the integrity of the hair, what is underneath the artificial pigment, how the hair reacts during the removal process, and how much we can safely accomplish in one appointment.

Sometimes removing black means multiple appointments. Sometimes the goal has to be adjusted along the way. And sometimes the healthiest choice is to stop before we reach the desired level.

✨ Color correction is a process, not a magic eraser.
