Super vulnerable post but as we enter September, I feel super led to share my story in hopes of helping someone else out there that may be struggling with the same or similar issues. Everyone sees the me that’s behind the camera, greeting you all with smiles and hugs and let’s be real, that’s not who I always was/am. I suffered w depression/anxiety throughout my teen years & did so silently with the only person knowing how to help me cope being my mom. And as most know, I lost my mom at 18 & after that my life took a huge turn & I spiraled. Shortly after that, I started sm0king daily to cope, then got kicked out, & stopped talking to my family. I was seen as a “disappointment” for my decision, but I was just an 18 year old trying to maneuver life as an adult, while grieving my mom, and trying to figure out how to fend for myself. Growing up in a traditional Mexican family, mental health isn’t real & you’re taught to just be “mentally tough” and be grateful that you’re alive. However, it was very real for me. I was silently fighting battles nobody knew about, not because I didn’t wanna talk about it, but mainly because nobody asked. I often got applauded for “being so strong” and “carrying it so well” all while hoping someone would simply ask if I was okay. I’ll never forget the night I cried on my bathroom floor & had officially convinced myself that my family would be better off without me, that the world would’ve been a better place without me in it. I needed a friend. I needed my mom. And that night, the only person that was there for me was a family friend. She begged and pleaded for me to open the door so we could talk. She held me as I sobbed as I wrote my family letters & she reminded me I was loved even if it was just by her. That was enough for me that night. And it has been ever since.
