On July 23rd, a 31-year-old woman rushed into Grovetown Police Department, claiming she had been a victim of human trafficking and held captive for months. She revealed being pushed into prostitution and held against her will at a Grovetown residence by Joe Lewis Hills, Jr., the 36-year-old suspect. She noted she was transported to multiple cities across Georgia, per WJBF.

Hills allegedly transported the victim from Macon to Savannah and eventually to Grovetown. While in Grovetown, he subjected her to physical abuse, choking her to the point of unconsciousness, and threatening her if she didn’t continue as a pr******te. The victim also disclosed being “branded” on her body. On Tuesday, she informed Hills that she had a client to meet and used a ride-sharing service to escape. She told the driver to take her to the Grovetown Police Department.

Using license plate reader technology, detectives confirmed the victim’s story of her journey with the suspect from Macon to Savannah and Grovetown. They reached out to the local FBI office, which sent an agent specializing in human trafficking. The agent validated the victim’s report and identified a larger human trafficking network operating across the state. While the victim was speaking with investigators, Hills called and messaged her phone several times.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for a check-up. While she was being interviewed, investigators started monitoring the Grove Landing residence. On Tuesday evening at around 5:54, Hills was seen leaving the house, leading to a traffic stop and his arrest without any issues. A search of the home uncovered various drugs like methamphetamine, co***ne, and ma*****na, as well as two fi****ms. It was found that the suspect was on Federal Probation for two bank robberies he carried out previously.

Hills was apprehended and faces multiple charges including Possession of Ma*****na, and Possession of Methamphetamine amongst other charges. 07/25/2024
