The soap you wish your mouth got washed out with! We craft our soap the old school way, using lye. lard (tallow, duck, and goat fat as well!), and love.
Vellum Street Soap Company is a victual apothecary, basically meaning we don't believe you should put anything on your skin that you wouldn't put in your mouth. All of our cold process soaps are made from high quality, food grade ingredients, locally and sustainably sourced, with nothing added that doesn't have a beneficial purpose for your body. With our founders background as a chef, with a focus on sourcing sustainably and nutritional quality, you can be assured every ingredient that goes into our soaps has been researched and benefits tested, to get you the best possible finished product. Many of our ingredients are procured from local restaurants, excess ingredients that have no further ingredient use in the kitchen, but make wonderful ingredients for soap. We're proud of our relationships with these establishments, and are thrilled to make them more sustainable by working towards using every part of every animal and plant they bring into their kitchens. A whole lotta years ago my Nana Dottie was a single gal with three young kids, fresh out of a bad marriage and an even worst past, a little Appalachian gal from deep up in a holler of North Carolina, trying to make her way in the hustle and bustle of North Jersey.
When she met Bill, her luck, for the most part, changed. He promptly married her and welcomed all her children as his own. They moved into a beautiful house, she got to stop worrying about the safety of her children, and get a fresh start on having a happy family of her own. Somewhere around a decade later, when my mother ended her first marriage, he welcomed me as well.
Pop Pop Bill was a known workaholic and hard ass, smoking 4 packs of cigs and guzzling a six pack of Diet Coke a day while running his neighborhood grocery store in Bayside, Queens. I don’t remember him ever taking a day off (although I’m sure he probably did at some point), and I wonder, even though we weren’t blood related, if it’s from him my dedication to working relentlessly to build my businesses comes from.
Bill was a lot of things in life, a God fearing Irishman from Boston, a potato chip delivery man, an entrepreneur, a husband, a father, a hard ass, and a Knicks lover, but to me he’ll always be the guy who let me live out my dream, whether that was bringing home a cash register and pricing gun to turn our little house into a corner grocery of my own, reading his expensive leather bound books my mother swore I would ruin, or washing his back with soap (yes, apparently me and soap go back a long way 🧼).
And yes, that’s a washcloth (or warshcloth, as Nan calls it) right there on the tub edge for all of those saying a certain kind of people don’t use them 😂.
Thanks for always being there for whatever I needed, Pop! Your presence in this life will forever be missed, but you set an example that will forever live in my heart ❤️🕊️

RIP to the truck I dreamed of for 20 years- it was honestly a little mediocre while it lasted, but I’ll miss you all the same 😩
