Manual lymphatic drainage isn’t a luxury — it’s one of the most powerful tools for post-surgical recovery. It helps reduce swelling, alleviate pain, and speed up your body’s natural healing process.

Here’s a gentle guide to get you started:

🗓️ Weeks 1 & 2 — Every other day (about 3x a week) Your body is doing the most work right now — give it the support it needs.

🗓️ Weeks 3 & 4 — Twice a week as swelling continues to settle.

🗓️ Ongoing — Once a week, then transition to once a month for maintenance.

Every body heals differently, so I always listen to what yours is telling me. The goal is for you to feel better, move better, and heal fully.

If you or someone you love is preparing for or recovering from surgery, save this post and share it with them.

Why I Offer Manual Lymphatic Drainage at Muscle Management Services Philly

Surgery disrupts your lymphatic channels, causing fluid to pool in surrounding tissues. That’s the swelling, puffiness, and heaviness you feel during recovery. Your lymphatic system is responsible for draining that fluid, filtering waste, and keeping inflammation in check — but after surgery, it often needs support to do its job efficiently.

Whether it was a facelift, hip replacement, tummy tuck, or any surgery — your lymphatic system is now working overtime.

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) uses gentle, rhythmic strokes to manually guide excess fluid toward your lymph nodes so it can be processed and cleared from the body.

Research has shown it can:

✔️ Significantly reduce swelling and bruising
✔️ Lower the risk of post-surgical infection
✔️ Support faster tissue healing
✔️ Help your body clear residual anesthesia more efficiently
✔️ Reduce the formation of scar tissue and fibrosis

The typical post-surgical protocol starts with 3 sessions per week — then, as your body builds momentum and starts draining more effectively on its own, we taper down together.

Not every doctor will bring this up — not because it doesn’t work, but because post-surgical massage hasn’t always been part of traditional recovery training. More and more surgeons are now recommending it as part of a complete care plan, and the research supports why.

Always check with your surgeon before beginning — especially for timing and clearance.

+Hot Stones+

Heat penetrates deeper — Warmed stones transfer heat into muscle tissue more effectively than hands, releasing tension in deep layers without aggressive pressure.

Faster muscle relaxation — The heat causes muscles to soften and relax more quickly, allowing me, the therapist, to work more efficiently and the client, you, to receive more benefit in the same session time.

Improved circulation — Heat dilates blood vessels, boosting local blood flow, which speeds up the delivery of oxygen and removal of metabolic waste from tired muscles.

Nervous system calming — The warmth activates the parasympathetic nervous system, shifting the body into a rest-and-repair state — deepening the relaxation response beyond a standard massage.

Pain relief — Heat is a natural analgesic. It reduces muscle spasms, eases chronic pain (especially in the back, shoulders, and joints), and can be particularly beneficial for conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia.

+Cupping+

Lifts rather than compresses — Unlike every other massage technique, cupping pulls tissue upward, creating negative pressure that separates fascial layers and releases adhesions from a completely different angle.

Reaches deep tissue without discomfort — The suction accesses deep muscle layers without the heavy pressure of deep tissue work, making it ideal for clients who need deep relief but are pressure-sensitive.

Dramatically increases circulation — The vacuum effect draws fresh blood into stagnant, congested areas — accelerating healing, reducing inflammation, and flushing out metabolic waste.

Breaks up fascial restrictions — Cupping is one of the most effective tools for releasing tight fascia and scar tissue, restoring mobility and range of motion over time.

Reduces muscle soreness and recovery time — Athletes and active clients benefit significantly, as cupping speeds up muscle recovery by improving lymphatic drainage and reducing lactic acid buildup.

I believe in creating a calm, spa like experience without upselling the necessitiies.
