After the fire in August unexpectedly forced us out of our previous location, I had no idea what the next chapter of Eleganti was going to look like. But with so much love and support from our clients, family, friends, and community, we were able to get back on our feet, find a new home, and REBUILD.

So this isn’t just a Grand Opening — it’s a celebration of a fresh start. ❤️

Hi Crown Family,

As a licensed cosmetologist, my job goes beyond styling your hair. I also want to help you stay informed about the products you use on your hair and scalp.

We recently received information from State Board concerning hair and beauty products involved in past lawsuits, investigations and reported reactions. I’m sharing this to keep you informed—not to create panic or tell you to immediately throw away every product you own.

The main ingredient being discussed is DMDM Hydantoin.

DMDM Hydantoin is a preservative used to prevent bacteria and mold from growing in shampoos, conditioners and other beauty products. It works by slowly releasing small amounts of formaldehyde. Some lawsuits have alleged that products containing this ingredient caused scalp irritation, burning, breakage or hair loss.

An allegation or lawsuit does not automatically mean that a product has been proven unsafe. Reactions can vary, products may have been reformulated and not every product from a named brand contains the same ingredients.

Ingredients to check for on your product labels:

DMDM Hydantoin
Quaternium-15
Diazolidinyl Urea
Imidazolidinyl Urea
Bronopol
Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate
5-Bromo-5-Nitro-1,3-Dioxane

These are preservatives identified by the FDA as formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing ingredients that may trigger reactions in sensitive individuals.

Some complaints have also involved Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS). SLS is not a formaldehyde-releasing preservative, but it is a strong cleansing ingredient that may cause dryness or irritation for some sensitive scalps.

Selected Dove anti-dandruff shampoos
TIGI Bed Head Dumb Blonde Shampoo
Finesse 2-in-1 Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner
got2b Phenomenal 2-in-1 Thickening Shampoo
Maui Moisture Color Protection + Sea Minerals Conditioner
Selected Nexxus and Mane ’n Tail products
DevaCurl Low-Poo Delight Cleanser
WEN Sweet Almond Mint Cleansing Conditioner

This does not mean every product from these brands is unsafe. Many formulas have changed over time. Please check the ingredient list on the bottle currently in your home instead of relying only on the brand name.

Pay attention to symptoms such as:

Burning, itching, or persistent scalp tenderness
Redness, rash, flaking or swelling
Sudden or unusual shedding
Increased breakage or bald spots
Eye, nose, or breathing irritation

If you experience a reaction, stop using the product and contact a healthcare provider or dermatologist. Keep the bottle, ingredient label, receipt, and lot number if possible. Cosmetic reactions can also be reported directly to the FDA.

Your healthy hair journey includes knowing what you’re putting on your crown. Stay informed, read your labels, and pay attention when your hair or scalp begins behaving differently.
