WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH FEATURE: As an earlier post indicated, March is Women’s History Month. During the month, 16056 Area Insight will feature some women who have been a part of the area history. Since the Hotel Saxonburg is currently in the news it seems appropriate to highlight a contemporary contributor to the history of Saxonburg. Judy Ferree brought her background in the hospitality industry to play when she purchased the Hotel Saxonburg in 2010. Judy spruced up the ageing landmark, brought back beloved chef Alan Green, enhanced the hotel sleeping rooms, and was a philanthropist supporting the community and coordinating with others to have delivered free hotel-made meals to area residents in need. During her 13 years of owning and operating the centerpiece of Saxonburg’s Main Street, Judy put in endless hours and certainly faced a number of challenges in preserving a historic landmark and maintaining a quality, family friendly-oriented business. Judy did so with grace, a smile and a friendly spirit, and an occasionally a seasonal costume. Judy can still be seen contributing to the area through community events.
