Hot take: most people aren’t actually reading ingredient labels… they’re reading packaging.

And that’s where things get interesting.

Because the front of a bottle might say “clean,” “natural,” or “non-toxic”… while the back tells a completely different story.

Here are some common ingredients many choose to limit or avoid:

• Fragrance / Parfum (unspecified scent blends)
Can contain dozens of undisclosed chemicals. Some may be irritating for sensitive skin.

• Phthalates (often hidden under “fragrance”)
Used to make scents last longer. Some concerns exist around long-term endocrine (hormone) disruption.

• Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben)
Preservatives that prevent mold and bacteria. Some people avoid them due to studies exploring possible hormone-related effects.

• SLS / SLES (sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate)
Strong cleansing agents that can be stripping or irritating, especially with frequent use or sensitive skin.

• Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea)
Help prevent bacterial growth but can release small amounts of formaldehyde over time, which some people choose to avoid.

• Synthetic dyes (FD&C Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1)
Used for color only—not function. Some individuals report sensitivity or choose to avoid artificial coloring altogether.

• PEGs (polyethylene glycol compounds)
Used to improve texture and absorption. Some are concerned about contamination risk during manufacturing (like 1,4-dioxane, depending on purification).

Crazy that brands use these ingredients that then sit on your skin, soaking into your bloodstream. Once you recognize ingredient names, you stop relying on front-label claims… and start understanding what you’re actually using.
