🌭 IS THE WIENER WORTH IT? — GRAY’S PAPAYA, NYC 🌭
All right, folks, our next stop was the legendary Gray’s Papaya in New York City—and honestly, I walked in wanting to hate it. 😂
I didn’t like the name. I didn’t understand why papaya and hot dogs were hanging out together. I had already decided there was no way I was going to like it.
Well… I was wrong. Very wrong. Four-hot-dogs-wrong.
Gray’s Papaya was founded in 1973 by Nicholas Gray, a former partner of Papaya King. It became a New York institution by serving quality hot dogs at prices regular people could actually afford. Even the papaya part finally made sense—it comes from the tropical fruit drinks they serve alongside the dogs. History of Gray’s Papaya⁠�
This place is also a certified movie star. Gray’s Papaya has appeared in or been featured in You’ve Got Mail, Die Hard with a Vengeance, Down to Earth, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, The Back-Up Plan, and S*x and the City. In Fools Rush In, Matthew Perry’s character even has Gray’s Papaya hot dogs delivered from New York to Las Vegas. That is serious wiener dedication! Gray’s Papaya film appearances⁠�
But enough Hollywood talk—were the wieners worth it?
Absolutely. The dogs were affordable, cooked perfectly, and genuinely delicious. I tried a few different ones, and apparently my official reviewing process required eating four hot dogs just to be completely certain. I take this job very seriously.
Gray’s Papaya receives an 8.2 on the Wiener Scale! That puts it slightly above the Hot Dog King, but only because I got to try more variety here.
I walked in determined to hate the place and walked out four hot dogs heavier, questioning every opinion I’ve ever had. Gray’s Papaya turned this hater into a believer. 🌭👑

🍕 BONUS REVIEW: IGNAZIO’S IN DUMBO! 🍕

While exploring DUMBO, we needed something to eat—and believe it or not, I had finally reached my hot-dog limit. I didn’t know that was medically possible, but apparently it is. 🌭😂

So, what’s the next best thing? Some good New York “za,” of course!

We stopped at Ignazio’s and grabbed what might be the best pizza I’ve had in a long time. The crust was crispy, the cheese was perfect, and the sauce brought everything together.

I tried handing a bite to my starving children, and that was my first mistake. Once they tasted it, they turned into two tiny pizza-eating machines. They didn’t care whose turn it was—or whose slice it was. I’m pretty sure I paid just to watch them eat my lunch. 😂

Every time I reached for another bite, one of them appeared like a seagull at the beach. At one point, I had to protect my slice like it was the last piece of food on Earth.

Ignazio’s gets a 9 out of 10 on the pizza scale! 🍕🔥

Why not a 10? Because I would’ve needed to actually eat more than three bites to make that decision.

If you’re visiting DUMBO, Ignazio’s is absolutely worth the stop. Just don’t let your kids see you holding the pizza.

Today, we recognize the construction workers, factory workers, truck drivers, healthcare professionals, teachers, first responders, mechanics, food-service workers, small-business owners and every hardworking person who gets up each day and puts in the work.
As a small family business, Underdogz understands the long hours, sacrifices and pride that come with working toward something bigger. We are grateful for every worker who keeps our communities strong—and especially for everyone who chooses to support hardworking local businesses like ours.

🌭👑 IS THE WIENER WORTH IT? — THE NEW YORK HOT DOG KING 👑🌭
You already know Underdogz couldn’t visit New York City without putting the legendary Hot Dog King, Dan Rossi, on the Wiener Worth It list!
Now, I may have messed up a little because I only tried one item. With an entire menu in front of me, I went straight for the New York staple: an all-beef hot dog topped with sauerkraut, New York-style red onion sauce, and spicy brown mustard.
But honestly, if you’re standing on a New York sidewalk eating from one of the city’s most famous carts, how could you order anything else?
This combination has become a true New York street-cart classic. The sauerkraut brings the tang, the spicy brown mustard adds some bite, and that sweet-and-savory red onion sauce ties everything together. The famous tomato-based onion sauce became closely associated with New York’s Sabrett carts and helped create the unmistakable flavor people now connect with a classic NYC dog.
It’s simple, messy, full of flavor, and somehow makes you feel like a true New Yorker—even if you still say “yinz” when you’re finished eating it. 😂🗽
🌭 THE WIENER SCALE: 8/10 🌭
It definitely hits the spot and gives you the authentic New York street-food experience. Now, did Dan possibly earn a few extra points for being such a genuinely nice guy? Absolutely.
The great customer service, friendly conversation, clean and welcoming cart, menu with clearly posted prices, personal interview, and the entire experience all helped that score.
That’s the thing about an Underdogz review—it’s never only about what’s sitting inside the bun. We review the food, service, prices, atmosphere, story, and overall experience. A great meal can fill your stomach, but a great experience is what you remember.
So, is the Hot Dog King’s wiener worth it?
YES! If you’re in New York City, find Dan outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art and experience a real piece of New York street-food history for yourself. An 8/10 on the Wiener Scale and an unforgettable experience with a genuine legend of the business! 👑🌭
