Cetaphil Gentle Exfoliating SA Cleanser - Is it really for all skin types?

This cleanser caught my attention because it contains a blend of salicylic acid, mandelic acid, and gluconolactone — a combination that can be helpful for some skin types, but certainly not for everyone.
Good for:
Oily or normal skin types that can tolerate gentle exfoliation
Not ideal for:
Sensitive skin, which may react with irritation
Dry skin, since salicylic acid reduces the natural oils that dry skin needs

Daily use, because frequent acid exfoliation can gradually weaken the skin barrier.

My professional note:
Even when labeled as “gentle,” acid-based cleansers are not meant for daily use. Over time, too much exfoliation—especially through acids—can disrupt the skin’s protective barrier, leading to redness, sensitivity, and breakouts.

A cleanser’s main role is to thoroughly remove makeup, impurities, and excess oils.
Exfoliation should be its own intentional step, chosen based on your skin’s needs and performed with care. And exfoliation doesn’t have to be chemical; mechanical or enzymatic options can also work beautifully when matched appropriately to your skin.

CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel:
Is It Really for “All Skin Types”?

One of my dear clients recently sent me an Instagram post from a doctor praising the CeraVe Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel and asked if she could use it. Moments like this remind me how easily skincare marketing — especially the phrase “for all skin types” — can create confusion.

Even though this is a well-formulated product, it is definitely not ideal for everyone.
Here is how I break it down as an esthetician with a background in biology and ingredient chemistry:

Best for normal to oily skin:
This gel is lightweight, absorbs quickly, and doesn’t leave a greasy finish. If your skin tends to get shiny or you prefer very light textures, this can be a good option.

Not enough for dry skin:
If your skin is dry, tight, dehydrated, or compromised, this moisturizer won’t provide enough nourishment. It does not contain enough lipids (healthy fats), occlusives, or barrier-supporting ingredients.
If you still want to use it, apply a richer cream or a facial oil on top to properly lock in moisture.
