Hair loss clients don’t need more opinions. They need a roadmap. Here’s the way I teach pros to think: hair loss usually comes from a few big buckets. Your job is not to diagnose. Your job is to listen, look, and ask better questions so you can build a smarter plan and know when to refer out. 1) Pattern clues Slow thinning over years often points to genetic patterns. Sudden shedding usually has a trigger. 2) Timeline clues A lot of shedding shows up 2–3 months after the body goes through something stressful. Illness, surgery, major stress, diet changes, new meds. 3) Inside-the-body clues Iron and ferritin, vitamin D, B12, thyroid markers, blood sugar swings, hormones, gut absorption. Hair is not “vital,” so it’s often the first place the body cuts corners. 4) Scalp clues Inflammation, itching, burning, scale, bumps, irritation. A scalp that’s angry won’t grow great hair. 5) External clues Traction, extensions, tight ponytails, heat, chemicals, plus product reactions or allergies. Medication and OTC reminder Yes, even over-the-counter meds and supplements can be part of the story. So can allergy meds, acne treatments, hormones, antidepressants, and more. The point is not fear. The point is awareness. Save this for your next consult.
