Chair Master Exercise

Chair Master Exercise

Chair-based exercise Solutions to inactivity. Using a chair allows for freedom of motion or speed not accessible if they are standing.

The intention is not to limit movement or keep folks off their feet, but rather to increase mobility, feelings of well-being, and encourage physical activity in people who might otherwise think that exercise is out of reach.

Sooo many aspects of Nia contribute to improved balance and feeling more comfortable when you move - however you move.
This series of webinars is one of the best ways to improve your life as you go forward, chock full of tools for feeling better.

Join me to explore how we become Elders with a capital E.
My life with Nia continues, ever more rich as the decades slide by. I have no idea how I would have evolved (or not) without Nia Principles and practices shaping my movement, my thoughts, and my spirit, of course.
My career as a gerontologist in Elder fitness, wellness and recreation has blended into my life as an Elder myself with the varied needs, issues, realizations, and wisdoms that come along.
Awareness of sensation is such a valuable tool for this journey of life.

I always ask: What am I going to be for Halloween this year? In my opinion, one of the best parts of the holiday is the opportunity to try on being different characters. I worked for many years in a setting where it was part of my job to be in costume for the day. My first year, I started with a shocker: my usual clothing but with multiple “injuries” like a bandage on my head and knee, a sling, crutches, more bandages. It was too scary, in a real-life sort of way, and folks were repulsed. So then I went with standard fare like witches and pumpkins, until I started to see symbolism in the costume choices: I provided transportation as part of the job, so I dressed like a chauffeur; or, I often tidied up and arranged furniture, so I came as a 50’s housewife, complete with heels, shirtwaist dress, the hairdo, and a vacuum hose over my shoulder. As the loving, happy person on site, Raggedy Ann was a natural.
Some years it felt important to be sensitive to the times and I made my own Liberty costume (found the headdress pattern in a fabric store and dyed old curtains grey green for the robe). And then came the years when some part of my soul needed to be expressed so I devised a way to be a tree, a spider, a squirrel, an owl, or an opposite, like a couch potato. These costumes provided self-expression and the time and attention that went into creating them felt very satisfying.
This year, I have no event to attend, no community to dress up for, and I feel like there’s something lacking in my life. It’s my own doing. The soul-searching that is occurring this year brings me to realize that I need to create community and invite others to join me in playfulness and/or personal clarity.
I do get to explore a variety of personalities in my current work, which doesn’t feel at all like a “job.” As a Nia Technique teacher and trainer, I guide students to explore the different “energy personalities” drawn from Martial Arts, Dance Arts and Healing Arts which we use to provide diversity for our bodies in movement experiences. My body loves the opportunity to switch between power and precision, playful and expressive, calm and aligned, for instance. I come out of class feeling like a more complete person than if I had just stayed with one style. Join me for a class:

Nia works whether you are on your feet or not

Many of the things happening to, and in, my body are familiar to other people in their late 70’s. What I find different for me is that the path is not one-way downhill. I get better. I expect to improve. I have incorporated philosophy and practices of Nia into my everyday life. Daily. I seek medical care when needed and enjoy the benefits of new technologies like cataract surgery (wow! bright colors again!). I also take action to see what I can do to bring about my own healing.
I bring to the Nia Art of Sensation Training my 30+years of experience leading fitness and recreation for seasoned bodies; my degree in gerontology specializing in older adult fitness; my continuing education in improving balance and bone density; and my delight in finding how each of the 13 White Belt Principles applies directly to issues common in the latter 3rd of life.
Join me for Art of Sensation as a series of online webinars (the same 16-week format used by many Nia Trainers). New series begin on Sept 29 or January 6.
