Feeling good after plastic surgery can make it tempting to speed up your recovery, but your body is still healing beneath the surface.

Doing too much too soon can increase swelling and irritation, and aggressive treatments like wood therapy or cavitation may be too much for healing tissue early in recovery.

Your recovery timeline should be based on how your body is healing and the guidance of your surgical team.

1. Your swelling was improving, then suddenly comes back much stronger.
Day-to-day fluctuation can happen. A significant reversal after steady improvement is worth bringing up with your surgical team.

2. One side is becoming noticeably larger than the other.
Some uneven swelling can happen early on. New or increasing asymmetry deserves attention, especially when the change happens quickly.

3. You develop a new localized pocket or bulge.
Swelling that collects in one distinct area instead of looking like general puffiness may need to be evaluated by your surgeon.

4. One area keeps getting tighter, harder, or more uncomfortable.
Post-op tissue can feel firm while healing. Pay attention when one specific area continues changing while the surrounding swelling improves.

5. Your swelling suddenly changes along with other symptoms.
Calf pain, chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, or sudden leg swelling can be warning signs that require prompt medical attention.

Your swelling doesn’t need to look exactly like someone else’s recovery. Watch the pattern, follow your surgeon’s instructions, and report significant or sudden changes.

Save this for your recovery and follow for more post-op education.

1. I’d review every medication and supplement I take with my surgical team.
Even vitamins, herbal products, and over-the-counter medications can matter before surgery.

2. I’d practice getting in and out of bed before surgery.
You may be surprised by how much you normally use your core, arms, or chest for basic movement.

3. I’d plan for constipation before it becomes a problem.
Anesthesia, pain medication, less movement, and changes in eating can all slow things down during recovery.

4. I’d ask exactly how much I should be walking during the first few days.
“Get up and move” can mean something different for every procedure, so I’d want clear instructions from my surgical team.

5. I’d learn the difference between ugly healing and dangerous healing.
Bruising, swelling, and asymmetry can look alarming. I’d also know which symptoms mean I need to contact my surgeon immediately.

6. I’d stop assuming tighter compression means better results.
Compression should follow your surgeon’s instructions. More pressure is not automatically more helpful.

7. I’d take clear pre-op photos for my own baseline.
Having a reference can make it easier to notice changes in swelling, bruising, and skin appearance throughout recovery.

A lot of post-op stress comes from not knowing what to expect before surgery even happens.

Save this if you have surgery coming up, and always follow the instructions from your own surgical team.
