I am writing at the request of my Personal Trainer and Group Fitness Instructor, Terry Smith-Harris.

I am a new member of the Ballard Health Club. I joined in September.
After reading all the Trainer Bios, I chose Terry because of his stated intention to become a Physical Therapist.
I could not be more pleased with my choice.

I have a complex medical history. Five and a half years ago I had the following surgery: Stage I: Left L1-5 Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion, Left L3-4 Anterior Osteotomies. Stage II: Right L5-S1 Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion & L1-S1 Instrumental Postero Lateral Spinal Fusion. This surgery left me with a dropped foot, the challenges of which are progressively getting worse. Though I have zero back pain and see a PT 3 times a month, I knew I needed help to create an exercise program that would keep my interest and be doable. I should add I am 74 years old.

From the several months I’ve worked with Terry, I have become more committed to becoming as fit as possible. Terry Is always ‘up,’ clearly knowledgeable and engaging in sharing his love of exercise. He gives his all. His workouts move along and are actually fun. I feel confident he has a plan and a solid rationale for doing what he is teaching. He can explain the physiology of the various exercises, why they’re important and how to do them well.
Another positive I greatly appreciate about Terry is his interest in me. It’s clear I’m not just ‘another body’ in the room. He follows up electronically after a particularly challenging session. He is also in communication with my PT and tailors my exercises according to her input.

I am writing this reference on behalf of Terry Smith-Harris.

For the past 4 1/2 months, Terry has been my personal trainer at the Ballard Health Club. We train once or twice a week for 30 minute sessions. When I first started training with Terry, I was going to a Chiropractor 2-3 times a week for lower back and hip pain. Since working with Terry, my back and hip pain have been alleviated and I have not been to the chiropractor in over 2 months.


Key points:

- Terry, takes the time to listen and explain. Explanations are clear & concise. He is the first trainer I’ve had, who took the time to explain what may be causing my back pain and what his approach would be to address my particular issues.

- Training sessions are very focused, working on the specific areas that need to be strengthened before moving to the next level.

- Well prepared but flexible. There is always a plan for each session, but he is is ready to adapt exercises or change exercises if needed. For example during one session, I was not feeling well and was dizzy. Rather than cancel the session, we moved the workout to the floor mats and I was still able to get a great workout.

- Always positive and encouraging, even when making corrections or I am having a bad day.

- Pushed me out of my comfort zone. Terry, doesn’t let me quit but has a good sense of how and when to raise the bar or when to pull back a bit to keep me moving forward and avoid injury.

- Terry’s job doesn’t end when the training sessions are over. He makes all of his students feel important. Always available for questions outside of the training sessions. Freely shares knowledge with Club members whether they train with him or not

- Based on observations, Terry has also taken on the role of mentor with some of the younger or less experienced personal trainers at the club.
