Le Noir Bleu

Our beautiful, big hawthorn tree has its bright red berries back!
Hawthorn is definitely one of my favorite trees. And it’s one of the most beautiful to watch seasonally.
In the fall/winter it gets these bright red berries and in the spring its round-tipped green leaves begin to flourish.

Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna /Crataegus oxyacantha) aka Hagthorn, Thorn, Mayblossom, Mayflower, Bread and Cheese Tree, etc. magickal properties:
spiritual protection
creates balance
purifies
attracts love
enhances sacred unions
increases fertility (and therefore traditionally used at weddings)
and also symbolizes (oddly) celibacy (perhaps at different times).

Considered a highly sacred tree, it
represents hope, helps heal a broken heart, attracts fae,
increases general happiness,
protects homeowners from evil ghosts, and increases a home’s general protection.
And this tree is believed to protect homes from lightning and storm damage.
Medicinal properties: astringent, a heart tonic, a calming tea, lowers blood pressure (see a doctor first!), sedative, antioxidant, antispasmodic, diuretic, and a kidney tonic.

Finally, getting around to posting our Lughnasadh acknowledgement from August 1st. This is the time of the first harvest… And indeed we have spent the month harvesting over 100 Honeycrisp apples, about 5 pounds of red and purple grapes (so far), hawthorn berries (for our bunnies— and tea), fig leaves (for tea!), rose petals (the bunnies also love these), and drying figs that we harvested in July, baking bread, etc.
Colors like gold, yellow, orange, green, and red are all highlighted, along with symbolism of the sun, grains, fruits, fresh herbs, dancing, storytelling, etc.
This is a good time to practice any special skills that you have as well as focus on gratitude. We both wrote out a list of 10 things we are grateful for.
Next up, on September 23rd, we will recognize Mabon (aka the fall equinox aka the second harvest).
This is a busy time of year for people who tend gardens, so it’s a great time to focus on and be thankful for abundance. We always enjoy sharing our bounty with our neighbors and friends. 💚

Quite late in posting this… But this was my Beltane altar. 🌸
Life has been full of blessings, but also full of disarray and shock and triggers and massive injustices (one of which is I’ve recently been dealing with an intellectual property dispute involving one of my longstanding products. Fortunately, I’ve been gathering documentation of my use of the name over many years, including social media posts, product photos, sales records, and market appearances. It’s tiring and time-consuming, but I’m focusing on documenting the facts and advocating for my work as an independent artist. I’ve located documentation showing my use of the name for many years, including public sales, product photos, social media posts, and market appearances predating the trademark claim filing. I’m continuing to gather records and let the documentation speak for itself.
Coincidentally, the always gorgeous and brilliant was talking about something similar with the company Patagonia recently).
Some of the rest just feels too brutal to even talk about right now. Some of it I will eventually get around too.
But focusing on the positive… The roses are in full bloom in our yard… So many colors (red, neon orange, light pink, dark pink, yellow, etc)! So many beautiful scents! Same with the azaleas (pink, purple, white, red, etc). The cherries are ripe, the figs are halfway grown, the grapes are in their infancy, the apples are about the size of walnuts—but coming along beautifully, and the Hawthorne tree in the back corner of it all is still watching over everything under this beautiful full blue moon.
I have also been deeply involved with trying to help homeless/abandoned, feral domestic rabbit colony that has been in our neighborhood long before we lived here. There is some progress.
