Today sees the launch of - a campaign to ask the government to cut the VAT for hair salons from 20% down to 5% as they have done for the hospitality industry.
Some hairdressers are down up to 80% in client numbers whilst still managing the huge overheads of running a bricks and mortar store.
It's estimated 10% of salons have already closed following lockdown, and 43% of salon owners don't know if they will be able to survive the winter without financial help.

So here's the thing....
In EU guidelines, the hairdressing industry CAN have its VAT cut from 20% down to 5% but it hasn't happened in the UK despite us still currently being part of the EU.
That extra 15% is significant, especially as the salon sector survives on relatively small margins given the overheads. That extra 15% could potentially winter-proof some of our best-loved businesses.

Read all about the campaign in today's newspaper and I've spoken to some of the industry's leading hairdressers on why this cut in VAT is so needed, and they are ready and willing to give as much detail on the financial impact to the treasury.
