Classic styles endure……)

For more than 30 years, Coco Chanel didn’t just stay at the Ritz Paris. She lived there.

From 1937 until her death in 1971, Chanel made the Ritz Paris her permanent home. Her apartment was on the second floor, overlooking Place Vendôme, one of the most elegant squares in the city.

She chose the Ritz mainly for practical reasons. It was discreet, impeccably run, and only a short walk from her fashion house at 31 Rue Cambon. Living at the hotel meant she could move easily between work and home without leaving the neighborhood.

Unlike the richly decorated suites of the hotel, Chanel’s own apartment was relatively restrained. She preferred mirrors, neutral tones, and soft lighting — a style that reflected her approach to fashion: elegance without excess.

After the war she briefly left Paris, but when she returned, she moved right back into the Ritz.

In her final years she followed a strict routine: work during the day, dinner at the hotel in the evening, and late walks through Place Vendôme.

In 1971, Coco Chanel died quietly in her room at the Ritz at age 87.

Today, one of the hotel’s suites is inspired by her apartment — a reminder that the legendary designer didn’t just visit the Ritz.

She lived there.
