“Sober October” has officially kicked off!

This month encourages everyone to reflect on their relationship with alcohol.

As someone living in recovery, I really love these kinds of movements. To be clear, I am not anti-alcohol, but I do think we should openly acknowledge that alcohol isn’t good for us.

Alcohol is a toxic, psychoactive, and dependence-producing substance and has been classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer decades ago – this is the highest risk group, which also includes asbestos, radiation and to***co.

Alcohol is bad for us. Period. That’s science. Still, many people drink with impunity - outside the occasional headache or sleepless night. And it’s here to stay.

But more and more people are questioning their relationship with booze. And I think that’s cool.

When you give up booze, even for a short time, you will notice some amazing benefits. For starters, there are no hangovers. But the effects of alcohol on health go far beyond that:

Regular heavy drinking can:

-Damage your liver
-Increase the risk of certain cancers and alcohol use disorders
-Lead to sleep disturbances
-Impair concentration
-Contribute to feelings of depression and anxiety
-Weaken your immune system

By committing to sobriety for a month, you might experience several positive changes, such as:

-Increased energy
-Improved sleep quality
-Enhanced focus
-Lower cholesterol levels
-Reduced cancer risk
-Greater emotional stability
-Decreased irritability and anxiety
-Stronger immune response

Sober October is an excellent opportunity to reassess the role alcohol plays in your life.

But here is what is most important to keep in mind: while maintaining sobriety can be tough, remember that it’s OK to find it more challenging than you anticipated. If you finish the month with lingering questions or concerns, consider reaching out to a trusted friend, treatment professional, or therapist for support.
