Healthy locs don’t need a complicated routine. These 4 things can prevent so many of the problems I see every day.
1. Sleep right 😴
Use a satin bonnet or hair covering that completely encases all of your locs. A satin pillowcase works too, but remember, it won’t keep lint out. Covering your locs helps keep moisture in your hair instead of in your sheets and helps protect against lint.
2. Oil your scalp weekly ✨
Your scalp and roots need to stay healthy and strong because they are supporting the weight of your entire loc. Be thorough. Take your time and make sure you are getting throughout your scalp.
3. Lightly moisturize your locs daily
Use a light moisturizing spray or leave in conditioning spray daily. You do not need to soak your hair. A light mist helps keep your locs soft, moisturized, and healthy.
4. Shampoo and DRY monthly 🫧
Your locs need to be clean and completely dry to prevent mildew. As water evaporates, it pulls moisture from the hair, which can leave your locs dry, brittle, and more prone to breakage. A hard top dryer is best for getting them fully dry.

Your locs may be breaking down before they actually break off. 👀
Loose tufts at the root, random frizzy or soft spots, thinning areas, or sections that look like they’re holding on for dear life can all be signs of breakage.
Breakage happens when your hair gets too dry and brittle, causing the strands to snap anywhere from the root to the ends.
The fix? Moisture, consistently.
Oil or grease your scalp thoroughly at least once a week, and lightly moisturize your locs daily with a leave in spray conditioner or moisturizer.
Don’t wait until the damage is obvious. Keep those locs moisturized. 💙✨

I always say you can really see the health of your locs with a simple retwist and your hair hanging down. Styles can sometimes hide thinning, weak spots, joined roots, buildup, discoloration, uneven locs, sore areas, messy grids, odor, or other problems underneath.
If something about your locs just doesn’t seem right, or you keep fixing the same problem over and over, reach out. Sometimes you just need someone who knows what to look for.
