Things I wish I knew when I started doing hair

1. It’s okay to say no to a client. If you don’t feel comfortable doing what they are asking for it’s okay to say no and give a referral. Whenever I say no in life I always give a solution- which is usually a referral!

2. You decide what you specialize in. No one is going to make you a blonde specialist etc. whatever you love doing the most is what you should specialize in. We work long days- we should enjoy what we do!

3. You don’t need to work every Saturday. The days of working every weekend or 12 hour days are over. Although I’m still guilty of working long hours - I only work 1 Saturday a month now. It’s important to be with family & friends without doing their hair.

4. You can be bigger than your small town - without leaving it. I wish I knew this 10 years ago. I was always told I wouldn’t make any money. Always asked if I’m going to college. I wish I could tell my 18 year old self where I am now. It wasn’t easy or given but it’s possible.

5. I wish I took social media seriously. I remember when you have to be in college to be on Facebook lol. I remember when instagram came out and I told it was a filter app HA. It’s never too late obv but I often wonder when I would be if I did this at 24 not 34!

6. Not all family members need a discount. This is always a challenge for me… at this point it’s hard to talk about this topic to some. All I know is if you do discount your people must know how much or they’ll take advantage of you.

7. You don’t need to explain why you raised your prices. It’s no one’s business why. We are always so quick to over share. Raising prices is a statement not a discussion.

8. Asking for help is a good thing. 2 heads are always better than one - I even tell my client this. Sharing ideas, formulas etc are only to benefit each other & your client.

What do you wish you knew earlier in your career❓
