Yesterday, the FDA held a public workshop specifically addressing testosterone therapy for menopausal women. This was not an approval hearing, and no new female testosterone product was approved—but it was an important step forward.

Currently, there is no FDA-approved testosterone product formulated specifically for women in the United States. Providers must prescribe testosterone off-label using carefully adjusted male formulations or compounded medication.

Key takeaways from the meeting:

• The strongest evidence supports testosterone for distressing low sexual desire in postmenopausal women.
• Experts emphasized the need for a standardized, female-dose testosterone product.
• More research is needed regarding benefits for energy, mood, cognition, muscle mass, and overall well-being.
• Long-term cardiovascular and breast-health data remain important areas of study.
• Proper dosing and monitoring are essential to keep testosterone within an appropriate female physiologic range.

For now, nothing changes regarding prescribing: testosterone therapy for women remains off-label and should be individualized, carefully monitored, and prescribed after a thoughtful conversation about potential benefits and risks.

While this wasn’t an approval, we are encouraged to see women’s hormone health finally receiving the attention, research, and serious discussion it deserves.
