When your shears are new they shouldn’t feel different if your sharpener knows what their doing. As your shears age, though, they might start to feel a little different depending on how they’re made. As we all know scissor blades come in a variety of shapes. Some are convex, some are straight. Some are wedge shaped and some are flat. If your shears are more wedge shaped a bevel will begin to form as the shears are sharpened repeatedly. Even with a nice sharp cut angle this can alter the cutting experience as the cut edge moves deeper into the thick back end of the wedge. An experienced sharpening expert can help manage this problem while the shears are relatively new.

The answer to this question is yes.

The principal reason is that the thumb ring stands out a bit further than in ordinary cutting shears. This creates less closing motion in the hand decreasing stress on the muscles in your hand and forearm and easing the cutting motion.

Where swivel shears are concerned I have never seen a better design than the Mizutani speed star dual swivel. The thumb rotates on two axis for maximum comfort and high leverage in any cutting position.

They can take some getting used to for some people but for my money there isn’t a better designed swivel on the market.

This is a fun one for you DIYers out there (No, I won’t call it a hack). If your finger rest falls off and you are able to find it or have another one that fits, there’s an easy application that will help keep it attached once it’s back in place.

For this to work you’ll need a small bottle of Loctite or super glue or gorilla glue. Just make sure it has a pointy nozzle so you don’t end up using too much.

Open the glue and pick up the finger rest so you can see the screw end clearly. Now take the glue and put a small drop of glue on the screw. Put the glue down and screw the finger rest into the shears. As you turn the rest the glue will distribute around the screw and lock the rest in place. Place the cap back on the glue and you’re done. Boom! Like that.

Or you can just hand them off to your friendly neighborhood scissor fixer and they can do it for you.

Mizutani D19 6.7” lefty - Simply put, this is the best shear on the planet but it is not for the faint hearted. Experienced stylists only. Ergonomically designed crane handle for extreme comfort. Carbon resin bearing for the creamiest cutting. Dynamic cutting blade starts wide to provide power through the cut while sloping downward toward the tip for point and precision cutting. Power, precision, and the smoothest cutting you will ever experience. The D19 does it all. And because it’s lefty it’s technically custom which means you could expect to pay $1500 and wait six months for a pair of these shears. But I’m selling this pair for $995 w oil and sleeve included. DM me Toft details on how to purchase.
