How to embrace the new without losing yourself

1. Try the new foods—don't fear them.
Let your children experience burgers, tacos, pasta, sandwiches, and whatever else their new environment offers. Food is part of learning the world.

2. Keep your traditional foods alive at home.
Cook the meals your parents cooked. Teach your children the names of the dishes and the stories behind them. Don't assume they'll "just know" because they're African.

3. Make traditional food normal, not something reserved for special occasions.
If the only time your children eat your cultural food is at a Christmas gathering, eventually it becomes special-event food instead of our food.

4. Let children participate.
A child who helps wash the vegetables, pound the ingredients, stir the pot, or watch grandma cook is learning more than a recipe. They're learning belonging.

5. Don't make culture a competition.
You don't have to say, "Our food is better than American food." 😂
Teach them: “This is what we eat, this is where it comes from, and this is why it matters to us.”

6. Eat together when possible.
The dinner table can become a classroom without feeling like one. That's where children hear stories, learn manners, understand family traditions, and develop memories.

And here's the truth I would tell my future self:
Your children don't need to choose between where they live and where their family comes from. Give them both.
Let them enjoy the cheeseburger and the achu. 🍔😂
Let them love pizza and eru.
Let them know how to order at an American restaurant and how to sit down and appreciate a traditional family meal.
Integration doesn't mean erasure.
We moved to a new environment to build a better life—not to become strangers to ourselves.
