Just as grass has its roots, so disease has its root. If one cuts off the leaves without eradicating the root, the grass will still stand there. Zhu Danxi (1281-1358)

I spent 3 weeks of 1998 at the (then called) Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine (now Wellcome Collection) in London doing archival research into cupping. This included going through all the early editions of the English medical journal ‘The Lancet’ and noting how popular the practice was among physicians - until the time came (around the 1880’s) when the emerging league of biomedicine, in tandem with corporatist pharmaceutical companies, joined forces to discredit all previously valued therapies. It was fascinating to read how dramatic the schism was made for financial and professional reasons.
Anyway, and besides, during that 3 weeks in London, I also visited the Natural History Museum and spoke to the director about my research. I was granted a pass to go to the outskirts of London, where a secret building (for security reasons) with a multi-levelled basement stored a vast collection of objects including old medical equipment. This white-gloved curator (a very intelligent and kindly person) gave me 3 hours of his time showing me all there was of their cupping vessels. The shelves you see in the smaller pic were only a fraction of what was on offer.
