The holidays are in full swing and I’d like to remind you that although culturally this is a time for over-extending ourselves socially, seasonally this should be a time for slowing, reflecting, and shedding that which no longer serves us. I encourage you to prioritize nourishment and self care.
In the same way, I will not be increasing my work hours with the holidays but rather taking advantage of the rhythms that come with having small children, and taking extra days off to be with them during their breaks from school.
That said, I am here to fulfill your holiday season needs, whether that be advice, products, or gift cards with reasonable notice.

As the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, it is natural to crave rest and quiet. As a culture, there is a tendency to do the opposite: overextending and over scheduling ourselves. This season, I encourage you to lean into the whisper of impending winter and the intimacy it suggests. Enjoy a warm tea-infused bath, an intentional face massage, or a much needed nap. This may require you to say “no”, remove unnecessary tasks from your to-do-list or events from your calendar and that’s ok.

I often see an increase in breakouts, rashes, and dull skin during and in the months following the holidays.
Why? The increased consumption of conventional sweets affects your health and skin in a few different ways.
1. DNA damaging toxic additives congest your detoxification pathways meaning hormones and toxins don’t leave the body as they should, wreaking havoc on your skin.
2. Refined sugar causes an insulin spike, negatively affecting your hormonal balance and damaging DNA.
3. That same sugar also causes Candida overgrowth which is a root cause in most skin issues.
So throw out the Halloween candy and save your sweet tooth for something with more nutritional value. I like to treat myself to a chocolate bar from or make a healthy paleo dessert recipe from .

Do you experience dry skin during the cooler months?
Harsh outdoor weather as well as drier indoor air from running heaters or wood burning units are often, though not always, the culprit.
Here are a few tips for skin happiness as the temperatures drop:
1. Run a cool-most humidifier in your home, especially the bedroom, in your office. I even use one in the car.
2. Point the car vents away from your face (or any exposed skin) when running the heater.
3. Layer a water binding humectant under your moisturizer, and make sure you’re using it correctly. Some formulas with Hyaluronic Acid require that you add a bit of water when applying.
4. Switch to a more emollient moisturizer for a more resilient barrier.
5. Spritz with a hydrating facial mist throughout the day to replenish moisture.

EXERCISE!
It aids in detoxification, increases the flow of blood and lymph, promotes better sleep, and reduces stress. Exercise also helps to redirect hormones such as IGF-1 to the brain and muscles, as they might otherwise contribute to skin issues such as acne.
All of these factors affect your skin!

Weight lifting, yoga, martial arts, sports, outdoor activities (weather and air quality permitting), trampoline parks, dance fitness classes are a few ways to get some daily movement in.

While exercising in the early evening is more effective than in the morning, exercising in the morning is better than not exercising at all.

If you struggle with stress/adrenal issues, limit exercise to 30 min per day of lower-intensity activity.

Should you be taking a DIM supplement to help with your acne?

It depends.

Diindolylmethane (DIM) is produced from an extract of cruciferous vegetables and can be useful in estrogen detoxification. In some cases, it assists with clearing acne. In other cases, it doesn’t and can actually make acne worse.

Here is where it gets tricky:
Simply put, there are 3 phases to detoxification. 2 occur in the liver and the third in the large intestine.
When any one of these phases becomes overloaded, hormones and toxins recirculate into the bloodstream instead of leaving the body, often resulting in acne.
If the first phase is where you are having trouble, supplementing with DIM works great and will help to clear acne.
BUT if one of the other 2 phases is the problem, taking DIM actually further overloads the congested pathway, resulting in more breakouts.

What should you do if you are taking DIM but still breaking out? Set it aside and make an appointment for a consultation with us.

The summer heat and spending more time outdoors can leave your skin feeling greasy, dull, or sensitive.
Switching up your skin care to account for increased oil production, decreased water-retention, and additional exposure to UV light and pollution can help you get your glow back!
Have you made seasonal adjustments to your routine?

“Thank you so much for everything you have done for my skin and my sanity! You give me so much more than just a facial every time I see you ❤️”

This beauty came to us during her second round of Accutane. She had had enough and was motivated to manage her acne in a healthy manner. We carefully treated her breakouts in studio as she supported her skin with a custom routine and supplement regimen at home. All while systematically addressing the root causes through personalized diet and lifestyle adjustments.
