Ayurveda, physical well-being is addressed with nutrition, mindful exercise, and daily routine, including proper sleep with recommendations based on Ayurvedic medicine. Emotional well-being is addressed with stress management practices as well as emotional awareness and regulation training, based on principles of mindfulness. Spiritual well-being is addressed through the practices of meditation, yoga, breathing, and a teaching perspective that consciousness is the basis of existence within which physical form and mental thoughts arise. Pitta Dosha rules the Summer, with water and fire qualities elevated during this peak season. Sharp, hot, liquid, light, sour, pungent and fleshy smelling qualities can also become elevated at this time.
We continue our week of Summer Ayurvedic recipes with a gift from Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner, AyurYoga Teacher, and one of our own Alumni, Giuditta Paci-Fortune utilizes the sweet and cooling qualities of Cilantro juice during the hot summer months to reduce excessive heat in the body while simultaneously promoting detoxification and cleansing.
According to Ayurveda, the Rasa or taste of cilantro is sweet and astringent, the virya or energetic nature is cooling and the vipak or post digestive effect is sweet. Cilantro can have a gentle tridoshic action which cools, calms and balances each of the doshas.
This herb is rich in Vitamins A, C, E, K, calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium, which contains a number of health benefits and properties. Cilantro aids the body in ridding heavy metals, lowers anxiety levels, balances blood sugar levels, protects the heart against cardiovascular disease, prevents urinary tract infections, eases acidity in the GI tract and general internal inflammation. In addition cilantro can be used topically as well, soothing skin rashes and inflammation.

Cilantro Juice Recipe
Ingredients:
4 cups of water
1 large bunch of washed cilantro
Pinch of cumin
Juice from 1 lime
Directions:
Add 4 cups of water, cilantro, lime juice and cumin to a blender and blend for 1-3 minutes.
Strain to remove any impurities or large chunks
Pour into a glass and enjoy! This juice can also be applied to any sites of skin irritation!
Store in the fridge in an airtight container for 3-4 days
