Hello from the field in Perth, Australia! Our partners steam distill sandalwood (Santalum album) chips in Perth for essential oil. It can take up to seven days to distill. The highest concentration of oil is in the heartwood (center) of the tree, so older trees produce a higher yield and higher quality of essential oil. Where Does dōTERRA® Clove Essential Oil Come From?

Tropical and humid, the eastern coast of Madagascar has the perfect conditions for clove trees. Clove was first introduced to Madagascar in the early 1900s, and it has thrived on the island country. Madagascar’s eastern coast also has many hills, which helps protect clove plantations from cyclones.

Unlike clove trees grown in surrounding countries, the trees of Madagascar are grown under semi-wild conditions and only require occasional weeding and maintenance. Most clove trees are in small patches of 10 to 50 trees and frequently grow alongside coffee trees. It takes approximately three years for a clove tree to mature for harvesting.
