Jemima Boone Chapter NSDAR

Daniel Boone died "when the sun was half an hour high" on September 26, 1820 in his 86th year, having been born October 22, 1734. He died with daughter, Jemima, holding one hand and son, Nathan, the other. He spoke to them up to his last breath. "I am going," and finally, "my time has come." Those were his last words.

Word of his death spread rapidly. The funeral was held two days later at Jemima's home. The crowd was too large for the house so services were held in the barn around back. After the services the procession began along the road to the burying ground on a knoll a mile north, with young Jimmie Bryan mounted on a horse in the lead, holding an American flag. Boone was buried next to his wife, Rebecca, on September 28 in Missouri. He and Rebecca were reinterred in the cemetery in Frankfort, KY in 1845.

Happy National Daughters Day! Daniel and Rebecca Boone had four daughters.

Jemima (1762-1834) married Flanders Callaway.

Levinia (1766-1802) married Joseph Scholl.

Rebecca (1768-1805) married Phillip Goe.

To kick off its annual Constitution Week activities, the Jemima Boone Chapter placed a display at the Richmond Branch of the Madison County Library. A variety of free patriotic items were made available to the public.

Members of the chapter participated in the Clark Moores Middle School Constitution Fair. The 8th grade students created informational Constitution posters. The 6th and 7th grade students visited each station as well as the Jemima Boone Chapter stations that featured information about “America 250!” and “Constitution Week”. 6th graders participated in a special program on the “Ringing of the Bells.” Gift bags containing a copy of the Constitution were gifted to the 8th graders by the Chapter. Constitution Minutes were provided to the school to share during their morning announcements. Thank you to Constitution Committee Co-Chairs, Debbie Parsons and Andrea Hunt for coordinating this event.

Jemima Boone partnered with the Boonesborough and Berea-Laurel Ridges Chapters to present a Constitution Event at the Madison County Courthouse on September 17th. City of Richmond Mayor, Robert Blythe presented a Constitution Week Proclamation on behalf of the City and the Madison County Fiscal Court. Those in attendance participated in a Bells Across America activity by ringing bells while Madison County Clerk, Kenny Barger rang the courthouse bell at 4pm. A Constitution Week banner was placed on the lawn of the courthouse.

Jemima Boone also provided Constitution spot announcements to a local radio station to be used over Constitution Week. Another successful Constitution Week filled with events educating the community on the importance of our Nation’s Constitution!

Happy Constitution Week! Today marks the beginning of a tradition the DAR has proudly led for 70 years: celebrating September 17-23 as Constitution Week, a time to honor the United States Constitution and the freedoms it protects.

On this day in 1787, the Constitution was signed in Philadelphia at 4:00 pm, and church bells rang out across the city to mark the moment. Join us in the tradition of Bells Across America by ringing a bell for one minute at 4:00 pm EDT today to herald the start of Constitution Week.
