The key ingredient in the tanning solution is DHA. DHA reacts solely with the upper 25% layer of the skin. This layer stores your natural body oils and skin proteins. DHA reacts with these oils, proteins and oxygen and this reaction produces the bronze tan you will have. When the spray tan is applied to your skin, a tan forms in about 4-6 hours and continues to darken for up to 16 hours. The cosmetic bronzer is the color that is immediately visible during the session and it will wash off during the first shower, revealing the DHA bronze tan beneath. Exfoliating prior to a sunless tanning application is ESSENTIAL and crucial! By removing dead dry skin cells you are effectively removing the barrier that will prevent absorption of DHA bronzers into fresh, healthy skin cells! Depending on how well you prepare and take care of your tan afterwards, will depend on how long the tan lasts. A spray tan typically lasts as long as the natural exfoliation process of our skin, which is about 5-7 days. There are ways to extend the life of your tan listed below. It is important to keep skin moisturized after spray tanning as dry, flaky skin will slough off faster and color will fade sooner. You basically want to slow down your body's natural exfoliation process. Moisturizer keeps your skin from drying out and exfoliating prematurely. Shorter, cooler showers prolong the longevity of your tan. Use gentle and good quality moisturizing shower products. A professional shower gel works best, as bar soap (Dove, Irish Spring, Dial, etc.) After showering pat your skin dry with a towel, do not rub it. When you notice that you are starting to lose your tan, you can begin to use your towel right after showering to rub your skin and blend the tan. Everyone's skin develops it's own individual color. Some people develop a very rich brown tan while others get just a light glow. Individuals with REPEATED SESSIONS, their skin tends to get used to the solution and will start to develop more color. It will also hold the color longer and therefore you will be able to spray tan less often (approximately every 10 days to 2 weeks). If possible, shower beforehand and refrain from wearing perfume, makeup and deodorant. The solution can interact with the ingredients in those products and effect the outcome of your tan. It is not recommended to take a shower for at least 8-12 hours after your spray tan. The tanning solution will not stain your clothing but it is recommended to wear dark lose fitting clothing to your appointment. You have the option of tanning with your undergarments or bathing suit on. You may also tan n**e. I am a certified spray tan technician.
