My van that I needed to transport my five sons, two of which have been in wheelchairs due to since last summer, has gone out completely. It was a 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan with over 230,000 miles on it, so it was probably time for it to go. The problem is, I can't transport my sons without it. Thankfully, they ride the bus to and from school, but they also like to visit the mall, parks, the reservoir, and take short trips. Now, we can't do that.
The van I had wasn't even wheelchair accessible. The middle seats could go down into the floor to make the interior just big enough to fit the two wheelchairs. So, I purchased a ramp big enough to get them in and out and we were able to ride.
Now, I need to get something else and I want to do it right. I want them to be able to get in and out safely and have enough room to be comfortable while riding. The reason I've put this off for so long is because a wheelchair accessible van is very expensive. The price includes the cost of the vehicle and the cost of the conversion which is about the cost of a new car. I checked around to see if there were any resources to help with the purchase. The Department of Rehabilitation has a program that can help with the conversion costs. I was told the waiting list was about 7 years behind but I added our names. I reached out to the rep that visits our doctor's office She informed me that there wasn't really anything to help but sent me a list of possible resources. None of those even covered half the cost.
So, I put my pride and fierce independence to the side and created a Go Fund Me to see what happens. If you can't donate, I completely understand because times are hard for most of us. However, if you could just take a moment to share the post, it would help so much.
