Day 21 | You may think that a medi-facial is something you should have only as a luxury or every once in a while. The truth is that regular facials are important for your skin. Regular medi-facials can have a benefit on both your physical and mental well-being.
Consistent facial care by your favourite esthetician can help prevent future skin care concerns that may appear from monthly breakouts to seasonal sensitivities, and even the first signs of aging, like fine lines. Most skin care experts agree that prevention is a key facial benefit.
Let's say you're young and have genetically great skin. You don't think you need a facial, but most people don't think about age management until it's too late.
Receiving monthly facials is about maintaining healthy skin, just like continuing your exercise program when your body is fit. It's the same thing with your skin. Keeping the skin healthy and fit with monthly facials is so much easier than waiting until you are seeing signs of aging – lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of firmness before you begin taking care of your skin with professional treatments.

5 Root Causes of Keratosis Pilaris
Your skin is the largest organ in your body, and so increased inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, food sensitivities, allergies, hormonal imbalances, etc. can all present with various skin manifestations or skin issues, including keratosis pilaris.
+ Eliminate Gluten - Food sensitivities to gluten are very common with many skin conditions, including keratosis pilaris. Gluten contains high levels of lectin, phytic acid, gliadin, and high omega-6 content. All these substances damage your intestines leading to leaky gut syndrome, which decreases your absorption of vitamins and minerals and increases the inflammation in your body.
+Omega 3 deficiency - Omega 3 fatty acids are crucial for skin health and have been found to help treat acne, psoriasis, eczema, dry skin, and several other health conditions. Unfortunately, our modern diets tend to be very unbalanced in essential fatty acid intake with the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in Western diets being anywhere from 6:1 to 60:1.
+ Eliminate Dairy - Sensitivities to dairy are very common with an intolerance to whey and casein which can irritate the skin causing issues like acne, eczema, and keratosis pilaris. Casein, one of the proteins found in cow's milk, is high in lectins which can lead to leaky gut syndrome and make keratosis pilaris worse. Even if you buy organic, you won't escape the casein.
+ Eliminate Processed & Refined sugars - Excess sugar in your bloodstream can cause Glycation. When essential skin building blocks collagen and elastin are impaired the signs of aging become more apparent; skin becomes drier and less elastic, causing wrinkles, sagging, and a dull skin appearance.
+ Fat-soluble Vitamin deficiency – There are 4 fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K are all very important for healthy skin. Unfortunately, based on our modern diets and lifestyles, many people are deficient in these extremely important vitamins. Fat-soluble vitamins are most abundant in high-fat foods and are much better absorbed into your bloodstream when you eat them with fat.
Omega-3s are called essential because they are required for several biological processes within the body. We can’t make these fats and we have to ingest them in order to survive. They are a part of the cell membrane of every single cell in your body.
Omega-3 essential fatty acids help to maintain cell membrane elasticity and structural integrity. Our skin’s structural integrity is dependent on the structural integrity of its cells. Therefore, it is important to consume high-quality omega-3 fatty acids regularly. Examples include walnuts, h**p seeds, chia seeds, and wild-caught seafood such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, and anchovies.
The best Omega 3 supplements for hormonal acne are ones that contain the highest levels of EPA and DHA because it’s these two essential fatty acids have been shown to help regulate hormones and calm inflammation.
Taking Omega 3s for your skin can benefit acne in three ways. First, it can regulate hormones such as testosterone that trigger the overproduction of sebum. Secondly, its essential fatty acid EPA is converted in the body to powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial substances, soothing the inflammatory response. And thirdly, it can stop the liver from producing a hormone called ‘insulin-like growth factor 1’ (IGF-1), which can, in turn, soothe spots.
Zinc plays an important role in skin health.
It is needed for protein synthesis and wound healing and is a vital antioxidant. It also helps break down substance P, transports vitamin A from the liver, and helps in the metabolism of omega 3s. Even mild deficiencies in zinc can impair collagen production, fatty acid metabolism, and wound healing.
Zinc is needed for building keratin and for the formation of the skin’s structural protein – collagen. In fact, collagen in the skin is produced by zinc-dependent enzymes called collagenases. Zinc is essential not only for the enzymes producing type 1 and type 3 dermal collagen but also for the cross-linking that gives collagen its durability and stability. Human studies have shown that decreased zinc results in decreased total collagen.
The skin contains a relatively high zinc content (5%), primarily found within the epidermis. Because of its abundance in the epidermis mild zinc deficiency rapidly leads to roughened skin and impaired wound healing. Zinc is frequently used in the treatment and management of acne. It is known to reduce keratinocyte activity, reduce the inflammatory response to bacteria, and improve immunity.
Zinc deficiency is also frequently found in eczema sufferers. In one 1999 study published in Contact Dermatitis, 73% of the eczema patients involved in the study had total improvement in their eczema with a one-month supplemental dose of zinc at 60 mg/day.
Do you ever notice that when you have a big presentation coming up or a week that has you STRESSED out, your skin breaks out...BIG TIME? This is because stress can worsen your acne and slow its healing time.
Every time we encounter a stressful event, our brain releases a hormone called corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), a hormone that signals our adrenals to release cortisol to combat the stress we are experiencing. There is actually a CRH receptor on every skin cell. So when we experience stress, CRH binds to its receptor on the skin cell, promotes oil production, and ultimately, contributes to the development of acne.
In fact, a 2017 study showed that female medical students exhibited an increase in acne severity during times of heightened stress. The study concluded that stress positively correlates with acne. Additionally, it is not only psychological stress that can cause acne, but also physical stress such as environmental toxins, cigarette smoke, and UV radiation that can also contribute to a stress response, and in turn, cause acne and other skin ailments.
Furthermore, acne can also be driven by another stress hormone called dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S). This hormone is produced by the adrenal gland and acts as an androgen in the body, similar to testosterone and DHT. In excess, DHEA-S can lead to a condition known as Adrenal PCOS, a type of PCOS that is not as common but is still responsible for acne, hair growth in unwanted places, and chronic inflammation in the body.
Chronic stress can also cause havoc to your gut microbiome and cause hormonal imbalances, leading to skin issues all across the spectrum - acne, eczema, psoriasis, etc.
I can't tell you enough just how vital slowing down and managing your stress is! Not only for the health of your skin but for your entire mind. body and spirit's health!
Acne has been referred to as ‘diabetes of the skin’ by scientists since the 1950s. Insulin is necessary for the body to convert glucose into energy, but excess insulin in the bloodstream can cause an increase in IGF-1, which in turn promotes skin cell growth. Increased insulin also raises levels of androgens (male hormones, including testosterone, which women usually produce in lesser amounts). Androgens are implicated in increased sebum production and excessive skin cell turnover, both of which can trigger acne.
Diet plays a vital role, as high glycaemic foods such as sugar, white bread, white potatoes, and white rice cause insulin levels to rise, but may also affect other cell proteins such as mTORC1 and Fox01 proteins, which regulate cell growth, sebum production, insulin sensitivity, and hormone activity: all factors implicated in the development of acne. A low carbohydrate diet is recommended, avoiding any refined or processed foods and limiting dairy while focusing on good quality protein, essential fats, and antioxidant-rich vegetables.
What is insulin resistance?
Insulin resistance is a condition when your cells stop responding to insulin effectively and your body is unable to decrease your blood sugar levels (by letting glucose into your cells). But high blood glucose levels signal to your pancreas to release even more insulin so you can easily end up with hyperinsulinemia (high insulin levels in your blood).
As you can imagine, having high levels of insulin in your blood is not ideal and if unregulated, it can have some tremendous health consequences. But how exactly is it linked to PCOS? One of the impacts of high levels of insulin (hyperinsulinemia) in your blood is that it can make your ovaries (which have insulin receptors) increase the production of androgens (male hormones). High levels of androgens cause many of the common PCOS symptoms such as acne, oily skin, hair loss, facial hair, and missing periods.
But high levels of insulin also prevent your body from breaking down fat and using it for energy, which is why it’s so difficult to lose weight if you have PCOS. Insulin is also an appetite stimulant that may lead to weight gain and excessive fat. Unfortunately, excessive fat is also one of the contributors to increased insulin production and insulin resistance development so the process goes around in a circle.
While high levels of insulin are oftentimes recognized as one of the symptoms of PCOS (up to 75-95% of women with PCOS are insulin resistant), it’s becoming more clear that it actually may be one of the root causes of the condition driving all of the other symptoms.
