Living in Rochester means our hair and scalp experience very different conditions from season to season—humidity in the summer, cooler dry air in the fall, and dry, indoor heat all winter long. What your curls needed in July is not what they need in January.

That’s why we adjust our curated, at-home care recommendations with the seasons. 🍂

We look at what your curls and scalp are doing right now and recommend products that support them until we see you again.

Because sometimes the answer isn’t adding more product—it’s changing WHAT you’re using or HOW you are using it, as your hair’s needs change.

Coarse curls + Rochester winter air = let’s talk moisture. 💧➰

Julia has that beautiful coarse texture we often see in natural redheads—love you, Gingers! 🧡

As we move into fall and winter, indoor heat means drier air, and coarse hair of any curl pattern can sometimes be more resistant to taking in water.

Here’s where I want you to think WATER before CREAM.

The more properly hydroloaded the hair is, the better the spring factor, definition and longevity of your curly set.

One of our favorite tricks? Two layers of gel.

💧 Layer 1: Attract the moisture
Start with a humectant gel like Uncle Funky’s Curl Stimulator or Innersense I Create Hold to help attract and hold onto water.

🔒 Layer 2: Seal it in
Follow with a setting product that creates an external cast, like Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Gel, Innersense I Create Curl Memory or I Create Definition Foam.

Not a firm-cast person? Swap that second layer for Innersense Air Dry Cream for a softer seal.

The goal isn’t to keep piling heavier creams onto dry hair. Get the water IN first, then help keep it there.

A solid curl routine doesn’t need to be complicated—it needs to have a purpose.

If you’re layering products without really knowing why, start here. Our 5-step curly hair routine builds hydration, definition and hold one layer at a time and can easily be modified for most curls.

1. LEAVE-IN → Hydrate, Nourish, Increase Springfactor

Gives thirsty curls their moisture foundation and helps with manageability. On Day 2+, use to add absorbent leave-in, moisture to dry ends before re-applying stylers.

2. CURL ACTIVATOR CREAM → Soften, Increase Springfactor
Helps wake up your natural curl pattern and encourage bounce and definition with lightweight emollients. Has light hold when applied sparingly.

3. FOAM → Build Volume or Seal

Add lightweight volume and hold without weighing the curls down. Certain foams, used without gel on fine hair, can provide an adequate amount of curl bundling, hold, and/or humidity resistance.

4. GEL → Set Shape, Flexible Support

Locks in the work you just did! Think ‘flexible glue”: layer gel to lock in moisture, block out humidity, and to condense curls into defined flexible, bundles

With medium waves and looser curl patterns, too much length and weight can stretch out the natural movement—especially through the top and around the face.

For this cut, the goal was to keep plenty of length while creating a shape that allowed her natural texture to do more of the work.

And look at what was hiding in there. 👀

By removing the weight that was pulling everything down and creating a shape around her face, her waves have more bounce, movement and definition—and the shorter length feels fuller instead of heavy.

This is why we don’t believe in one “curly haircut.” Waves, curls and coils all have different needs, and the haircut should be designed accordingly.

The thing about women and aging that no one really tells you, is that all of a sudden, you just aren’t SEEN anymore when you walk into a room. YOU FEEL INVISIBLE. The thing about Gray Hair that no one really tells you is that IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE QUIET, blending past recognition. It can be BOLD. It can be ELEGANT. It can be DRAMATIC. C’mon, lady— let’s turn some heads, again!

Meet Lisa, features\d above.
Lisa & I have done it ALL! In the past 15 years (or so), we have taken Lisa from a bright blonde to a casual bronde, and then later from subtle gray blending to bold grey enhancement.
She has that sort of grey that sits on the fence between grey, blonde, and brunette— we call it GREIGE. And we celebrate it!

One side contains much more white than the other…so for a long time we were just low lighting the light side to make both sides appear even (this is called Grey Blending or Grey Balancing). At one point, I mentioned that we could expand the brightness by adding more silver blonde to the natural white, “money piece” brightness in the front. Lisa took the idea let it simmer a while.

You see, Lisa is a professor; she always has eyes on her. That can feel vulnerable. After a particularly rough health episode, Lisa decided to REALLY shift her image before fall classes started. She gave me the direction:

“I like my grey, but I want a younger version of my grey... Is something like that possible? I am I asking for the impossible? Did you say we could do something bolder in the front?? ”

My response: “YES, Lisa. YES, I DID.”

[insert my giddy face and a little happy dance]

I took the green light and RAN WITH IT. We lightened and enhanced until we got that dreamy Greige, Money Piece effect.

While blending set up does require some extra time and planning, we really only do 1 big “marathon appointment” each year to re-set that blonde with fresh highlights. The rest of the year, we meet do low maintenance grey blending and grey toning on the days that she’s due to a cut (2hr appointments every 10-12 weeks).
