The Lipstick Journey

Today is World Cancer Day

Awhile back in a post from Humans of NY (), an outlet that lets people share their stories, there was a post with a woman in midlife sharing her story of growing older, kids, responsibilities, etc and how things change so quickly. It was the last 2 lines that I could not and still not get out of my head, ‘And all of a sudden you realize—that moment in time right before the dodgeball—that was the last time you saw the old you. And you didn’t even get to say goodbye.’

I mean, WOW. I was told I ‘probably’ had cancer on January 2, 2008 and my life has never been the same. No one’s life has stayed the same though so maybe I should say, my mindset and focus shifted, but I didn’t get to say goodbye to myself; my January 1, Happy New Year self. The mom with young kids, career, the ‘we have all the time in the world’ gal.

Since that day, I have had 3 more cancer diagnoses the last one being Stage 4 metastatic. I live, and I’ve lived with cancer for 16 years. Putting it into perspective, my youngest was just starting kindergarten when I was first diagnosed and now he’s finishing his junior year of college.

Time is always at the top of my mind. Paul Young, author of The Shack said, ‘Until we learn how to stay present we’re always absent to that which is around us.’ Cancer and really KNOWING life is finite on this earth has forced my mind to be more present, to desire more time with loved ones and to delight in more beauty in the smallest of things.

As I prepare for my next scan coming up, this World Cancer Day I don’t feel like a fighter or a survivor. No, we don’t get to say goodbye to who we were the day before because life is like that. We DO get to say hello to each new day and decide how we’re going to roll with it knowing not much is in our control. This day I feel peace and am grateful to be alive and that’s a pretty great place to be ❤️

It’s chemo Thursday, which means Taxol #7 out of 11 is complete, only 4 more to go! I had a great weekend, we hosted a St. Patrick’s Day celebration and spent the day at the park flying kites in playing. The good days are not lost on me but Monday a switch flipped and I was crying at the drop of a hat for multiple reasons. Today I got up, put on a real outfit and shoes (not joggers and sneakers), make up, and lipstick. My whole life my mom said no more than a 3 day pity party so it is ingrained in me (she’s now upped my allowance to 5 days). I don’t know if it was making myself look nice or just knowing I can’t live in my pity party state, but today was a good day.

Here is to another good weekend and no more pity parties, but if they happen that is ok. This is my journey.

February, Valentine’s Day, the Month of Love. I stumbled across this from Susan Cain and it’s great food for thought:

1. How imperfect we all are, how many flaws we have, and how naked we’d feel if everyone could see all the embarrassing thoughts inside our heads
