When the temperature dips below freezing, it’s critical to protect your skin from cold-weather health risks.

Frostbite occurs when the skin – and sometimes the tissue beneath the skin – freezes due to prolonged exposure to cold temperatures.

To stay warm and prevent frostbite, follow these tips from dermatologists:

➡️Dress in loose, light, comfortable layers.

➡️Protect your feet and toes.

➡️Protect your head.

➡️Protect your hands.

➡️Make sure snow cannot get inside of your boots or clothing.

➡️Keep yourself hydrated.

If you experience symptoms of frostbite, try to gradually bring feeling back into the body.

Never rub frostbitten skin or submerge your hands or feet directly into hot water; use warm water or a warm washcloth instead.

The winter is here which means it’s not only cool outside, but also dry.

Because of the winter conditions, that can mean dry, itchy skin for everyone, but especially for those who deal with conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Here are some products that can help your skin look and feel its best throughout the colder months.

➡️Facial cleanser: Look for products that specifically say "gentle" and "moisturizing" on the label. Avoid products that contain alcohol, as these can dry your skin.

➡️Body cleanser: Look for cleansers such as liquid or creams. Additionally, you’ll want to look for products labeled 'fragrance-free.”

➡️Body moisturizer: Look for ointments and creams that you squeeze from a tube or scoop from a tub, as opposed to ones you pump from a bottle, as thicker formulations typically pack more moisture

➡️Facial moisturizer: Look for creams, oils, or balms.

➡️Sunscreen: Look for more moisturizing sunscreen products, such as creams instead of lotions or sprays. Alternatively you can use a moisturizer and then apply sunscreen on top.

No one likes dry, and itchy skin! Dry skin can flake, itch, crack, and even bleed. To help relieve dry skin, here are 3 tips for you to avoid dry skin!⁣

➡️Apply thick, heavy cream (not a lotion!) after each hand washing. If more relief is needed, rub in petroleum jelly on your hands at least twice daily. If your hands are frequently immersed in water, wear waterproof gloves to help protect them.⁣ ⁣

➡️Read ingredients on skin care products. Deodorant soaps, heavy water based products, and products that contain fragrance can irritate dry, sensitive skin.⁣

➡️Use warm, not hot water, and a mild cleanser. Gently pat the skin dry.⁣ Apply moisturizer immediately after bathing/water exposure.

The first step to picking out the right moisturizer for your skin, is to know your skin type.

➡️Normal Skin: If you’re experiencing seasonal dryness aka-normal skin, a light cream and sometimes even a thicker lotion is sufficient for most younger people.

However, with age, the skin holds less moisture and needs more assistance. As you age, only a cream based moisturizer may be better suited for you.

➡️Dry skin: If your skin tends to be dry, and winter is making it even more worse, go for something thicker and more effective such as a cream or petrolatum based product.

➡️Oily skin: For some people, too much moisturizer can clog pores and lead to acne. This is especially true on the face, where you should use an oil free moisturizer.

If you are one of those people, skip the moisturizer or opt for an oil free moisturizer or a gel, which are lighter than other types of moisturizer.

➡️Combination dry and oily skin: If you have combination skin, your skin is dry in some spots and oily in others — often in what’s called the “T-zone.”

If this is the case, moisturize the dry spots and skip the oily areas.

A common environmental carcinogen is ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV light causes mutations in our skin to occur, and if there's prolonged exposure, it breaks down our collagen and elastin.

In lighter-skinned individuals, this presents as deep, heavy wrinkling and furrows across the entire face, especially in the corners of the eyes. UV exposure can also cause irregular or mottled brown pigmentation, sagging neck skin and jowls, hollows in the eyes, and drooping brows.

Interestingly, people who have darker skin do not usually experience deep, coarse wrinkles from years of sun exposure. For them, chronic UV radiation leads to deeper under-eye hollows and creases between the nose and lip corners. Pigmentation irregularities also occur.

The bottom line for all skin types is that when we're young, our skin has even tones and symmetric features with no contour irregularities.
