Proper prep and removal are the biggest factors in maintaining healthy nails under your enhancements. As much as I stress proper prep and a clean nail plate being the key to prevent lifting, improper prep and too aggressive prep that causes thinning can also cause peeling, cracking, lifting, breaks and chipping of the natural nails.
Handfiling, while less popular, is also an option for gel removal.
