The practice of using touch as a healing method can be dated all the way back to 5,000 years ago in ancient civilizations.
It has stood the test of time, understandably, because of its non-invasive nature and its effectiveness for a WIDE range of health issues.
Throughout history, every culture has had a different way of explaining the how/why behind what they believed massage was doing beneath the surface — and now, we see a lot of mixed messaging around explaining these effects.
Both personally and professionally, it’s important to me to look at what the research says on a given topic and ask questions like,
“Has this claim only been produced by one (potentially faulty and/or biased study), or is this claim repeatedly supported by a diverse collection of studies over decades of time?”
In this post, I’m using that line of thinking to answer the question: how does massage actually work?
I’d love to know your thoughts, if you agree/disagree on anything mentioned and why! 🙌🏼

Curiosity > Performance
The difference between a nice, feel-good massage and a therapeutic massage is not about how firm the pressure is or what techniques are used— it’s about creating a treatment plan in real time based on assessment.
What is your client’s goal with this session? Pain relief? To destress? Athletic event prep?
What is their health history? Their lifestyle habits?
What does their tissue feel like & how does it respond to pressure? Where might they have some sort of imbalance?
At MTMC, curiosity and assessment is vital for creating a personalized, therapeutic massage specifically for you.
“My shoulders always feel like they’re up to my ears, but I don’t even know how to start addressing it.”
“My post-workout soreness makes it impossible to keep pushing hard in the gym, but stretching alone isn’t making it better.”
“My doctor says I grind my teeth at night, but I don’t think wearing a mouthguard is actually helping the jaw clenching.”
“I feel like I’m always doing everything for everyone else, but I don’t even know how to fill my own cup anymore.”
I know a spot.
At MTMC, we tailor massage and bodywork specifically for people like you to help them rest & recover.
If you’re ready to prioritize feeling better and moving better, we’re here to support you @ The Muscle Therapy Massage Center!

“Since I attended Cortiva Institute of Massage Therapy in 2011, I practice massage therapy with a technical knowledge and understanding of the body, and massage’s effect on the body, while embracing an energy-oriented holistic approach.
I offer massage ranging from Swedish/relaxation to deep tissue or corrective/therapeutic styles including trigger point, myofascial, and neuromuscular techniques.
I am very passionate about massage therapy and believe strongly in its healing, life-enhancing effects and the true benefit of human touch with my greatest strength being my ability to find problematic areas and identify their root causes.
Whether you’re looking for a therapist to find and release your deepest knots to get to the root of that long-lasting and possibly debilitating muscle ache or if you just want to relax in a peaceful environment while the skilled hands of a dedicated healer melt away the week’s stress, schedule an appointment with me and let’s embark on a journey to wellness together.”

It’s shocking how many people have told me that they avoided getting massages for years (even though they were in a lot of pain) because they were just too nervous.
On one hand, I completely understand. If you’ve never had a massage, there are unknowns, like:
- am I expected to talk during the whole session? is it awkward if I stay silent?
- is it rude if I accidentally fall asleep?
- am I allowed to ask for more/less pressure or is that disrespectful?
- what if I want to skip an area entirely?
But ultimately, we are in the business of caring for other people. It’s very rare to meet a massage therapist that isn’t warm and accommodating, and at MTMC, we genuinely want your feedback so that we can tailor your session around you.
If you’ve been interested in getting your first massage but have some nervousness around the unknowns, please know that our goal is to make you feel comfortable and cared for, and that you’re in good hands. If you ever have any questions or concerns, we would be happy to walk you through our process!
PS: thank you to my lovely colleague Jamie for filming with me 🫶🏼 And yes, you are always allowed to talk about Sabrina Carpenter when you’re with us. Or other artists, we have an eclectic taste in music.
