BLISTERS after Cupping Therapy - although it is an extremely RARE side effect, it can happen as a result of a normal cupping treatment. In Chinese Medicine, blisters indicate the presence of extreme damp heat, dampness, or heat in the blood. In western medicine, I found a study that compared the proteins in the fluid of cupping blisters versus the proteins in blisters formed as a result of scalds or burns. The results from the study concluded that the components of the fluids were extremely different. “Cupping induced blisters contained several proteins which relate to the activation of certain immune pathways including anti-oxidation, anti-apoptosis, tissue repairing and metabolic regulation.” They’re not a bad thing! Make sure if this happens in your treatment, you immediately notify the patient! Don’t pop the blisters, teach the patient how to properly care for the blisters, so there’s very low risk of infection and educate the patient as to why this happened.
