When eyelash extensions aren’t cleaned regularly, the buildup affects both the health of the eyes and the life of the extensions.
Here’s what can happen:
* Oil, sweat, makeup, and dead skin build up around the lash line. This creates a sticky layer that traps dirt.
* Bacteria and mites multiply. Everyone naturally has tiny eyelash mites (Demodex), but when lashes aren’t cleaned, their numbers can increase, causing irritation and inflammation.
* Itching and redness become more common. Many clients think they’re allergic to the lash adhesive when it’s actually poor lash hygiene.
* Blepharitis (eyelid inflammation) can develop. Symptoms include red eyelids, crusty lashes, burning, watery eyes, and irritation.
* Natural lashes can become weaker if debris hardens around the lash base, making healthy lash growth more difficult.
* Poor retention. Oils and buildup break down the adhesive bond, causing extensions to fall out sooner.
* Extensions clump together. Dirty lashes stick together, preventing proper shedding of individual natural lashes.
* Bad odor. In severe cases, bacteria and trapped debris can cause an unpleasant smell.
* Higher risk of eye infections if bacteria become excessive.
How often should clients clean them?
* Daily if they wear makeup, have oily skin, work out, sweat a lot, or have allergies.
* At least every other day even if they don’t wear makeup.
